Carnage has killed a lot of people in his lifetime(s). But now he’s on the verge of plunging the entire world into darkness by summoning forth Cthulhu Chthon.

Observations
- Not sure how I feel about Eddie Brock thinking he’s got a line on what God wants for his life.
- In case you didn’t remember/know, Eddie Brock has a history of being a pretty terrible person with or without the benefit of a symbiote.
- “We stand in the presence of cosmic madness.”
- I don’t think Carnage/Cassaday know what they’re in for.
- YES!
The Verdict
Full disclosure: Heavy/outright references to Lovecraft’s mythos is a surefire way to my heart. Add in Mike Perkins’ incredible art, and you’ve got me hooked.
But what really impresses me about Carnage #15 is the way Gerry Conway’s script is able to make the bizarre dimensions, atmosphere, a sense of madness/despair within Chthon’s eldritch tomb come to life. What started as a story with shades of Lovecraft’s universe has become a full blown–and excellent–mythos tale.
Yes, the stuff with Eddie Brock trying to be a better person is overwrought. And yes, Chthon is a little underwhelming compared to the cosmic entity he’s based upon. But Conway and Perkins deserve a ton of credit for creating such an action-packed issue while somehow maintaining Lovecraft’s signature sense of cosmic dread.
It will be interesting to see how they resolve this, especially with regards to Chthon. Will it be a stand up fight, or something more mystical? Either way, Carnage #15 will make symbiote and Lovecraft fans go mad with glee.
