Inhumans Vs. X-Men #2 Review

You’ve been waiting months for it and it’s finally here – all-out war between the X-Men and the Inhumans! And for the characters at the center of the battle, the time has come to release all that pent-up aggression … on their rival species, of course.

Inhumans vs. X-Men #2 (Marvel Comics)

If the extra-sized Inhumans Vs. X-Men #1 had a bit too many talking heads for your taste, then the second issue of this event is right up your alley. Essentially, what co-writers Jeff Lemire and Charles Soule, and artist Leinil Francis Yu give you is one big fight. I mean, there’s still a lot of talking, but there are also tons of sound effects, like “SHRACK.”

Seriously, the sound effect “SHRACK” appears on one page five times. It seems to be the sound of Magik teleporting. So, move over Nightcrawler’s “BAMF!” It’s “SHRACK’s” time in the sun!

Aside from “SHRACKs,” there are a few nice character moments here. Specifically, an exchange between Medusa and the Human Torch at the outset of the battle. Do I sense a bit of tension between these two? Possibly setting up Johnny Storm’s exit from the Inhumans’ world and maybe – please God – a reunion with the rest of the Fantastic Four?

I will say, one downside to this battle between franchises is that, unlike the cool match-ups all over Avengers Vs. X-Men, many of IVX’s pale in comparison. Sadly, characters like Iso and Frank McGee just aren’t as iconic as the likes of Captain America and Hawkeye. With that said, it is cool to see the Human Torch battle Sabretooth!

Yu’s artwork on this series continues to be a highlight, and these visuals just wouldn’t look half as cool if they were being created by a lesser artist. His rendition of Medusa in full battle mode is every bit as regal as it is ruthless. Also, props to Yu for making All-New X-Men’s Angel’s post-Black Vortex design work. Mark Bagley’s softer style doesn’t quite sell the menace burning inside the young Warren Worthington III, but in IVX #2, he looks like one mutant you don’t want to tangle with.ivx2016002_int2-9

If you’re reading this event’s tie-in issues, go ahead and read IVX #2 first. If you’re not, still read this comic first, then do yourself a favor and pick up Uncanny X-Men #17 by Cullen Bunn and Ken Lashley. The creative team takes a one-page beat in this issue and manages to spin a compelling tale out of it in their own book (my top comic of the week).

As I’m one of those readers who prefers character-driven conversations over action, I didn’t enjoy the second entry into this series as much as the first. It also didn’t help that it was the length of a regular comic book (for some reason, I expected it to be as long as issue 1). But these are minor complaints – this is by no means a bad comic.

Plus, based on next issue’s cover, Magneto is going to face off against Devil Dinosaur. To quote Weezer’s “El Scorcho,” “How cool is that?”
