The somewhat wacky, but always wild Cave Carson continues this week and Michael Avon Oeming continues to draw its wickedly weird art. Chances are the answer is yes, but is it good?
Cave Carson has a Cybernetic Eye #4 (DC Comics)
So what’s it about? The summary reads:
Cave and his team find the underground city of Muldroog, and it’s not what he expected. Plus, Cave has visions of his deceased wife, but are they hallucinations, or is there more to this than meets the cybernetic eye? Also features a Super Powers backup feature by Thomas Scioli (G.I. Joe vs. Transformers)!
Why does this book matter?
Oeming continues to be a major highlight of this series due to the eye catching art and the extreme pop of color. Jon Rivera is uncovering a mysterious underground world that’s embroiled in Cave’s past that seems to be revealing a new idea every issue.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
A pretty scene to open the issue.
Once again, the art is gorgeous. Oeming has a cartoony look that suits the setting which also has a dramatic effect when it comes to gore. You don’t expect a cartoony alien to tear someone’s head off for example! There’s some rather awesome moments Oeming draws that are a wonder he could make come to life. Take for instance a moment where Cave sees a person long dead. She has yellow and red goo dripping from her mouth, a 3D effect makes her body look like an aberration and the Ben-Day dots that surround her make it all lift off the page beautifully.
The plot appears to be digging deeper into the underground world Cave is revisiting. That includes fantastically large doors, cities, and creatures for him to interact with. Much of this issue deals with a group who are chasing him, which further develops the struggle Cave is having with his ex-coworkers. Rivera opens the issue with a moment in the past that helps convey the difficult relationship Cave has with his daughter. This helps convey the weight of their relationship on Cave’s shoulders which is the most intriguing dynamic at play so far. Add in another family member’s appearance and the social drama is dialing itself up as well.
It can’t be perfect can it?
The final two pages progress the main villain’s plans to some extent, though I’m at a loss for who they are or why we should care. The plotting of the series hasn’t been the most coherent and there hasn’t been enough done to explain the stakes outside of Cave’s current personal journey. The final full page splash is awesome in its weirdness, but why we should care remains to be seen.

Is It Good?
Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye is a visual delight that you’ll never want to escape. It continues to be eye catching no matter the scene or its contents. The story itself is building up quite well, though its plotting is difficult to track in regards to the villains.
