Spider-Gwen #16 Review

Continuing from last week’s Spider-Man #12, Miles Morales finds himself in Earth-65, still looking for his missing father and with a potential ally/girlfriend.

Observations

  • Probably should have assumed this already, but there isn’t any cell or data service between dimensions.
  • We know from the first issue that this whole arc is leading up to Gwen and Miles becoming a couple (or at least kissing), but that was a truly beautiful moment of friendship.
  • Earth-65 Matt Murdock: Supremely slimy and extremely dangerous no matter what dimension you’re from.
  • GAH! SO CLOSE!
  • Just you when you didn’t think Doc Ock could get any creepier…
  • Oh snap.

The Verdict

This crossover could have easily been derailed by Miles and Gwen’s potential pairing taking on the feel of a forced marketing stunt. Thankfully, Bendis—and now Jason Latour have written these two with such fantastic chemistry that their coupling feels like something that absolutely needs happen.

A big reason for that (which Miles explains during the issue) is that neither of them have people their age who they can talk with about their particular set of issues. Even if Miles and Gwen don’t get together by the end of this (NOOOOOOO!!!), the bond of friendship between them has strengthened significantly.

Story-wise, I’m still not sure where this is going, but I’m definitely enjoying the journey. Earth-65 Matt Murdock continues to prove himself to be one of Marvel’s most cunning and ruthless villains. It was also great seeing him come face-to-face with someone who knows his much more heroic and noble Earth-616 counterpart.

On the art side of things, Robbi Rodriguez is as great as we’ve come to expect. Not only does he render wonderful looking fight scenes, but he also enhances Latour’s superb dialogue between Gwen and Miles via some inventive paneling choices and superb facial expressions. Things get a little unclear/trippy near the end (which was likely by design), but otherwise it’s one of the best-looking issues of the series to date.

I’m normally not a big fan of crossovers, but so far, “Sitting in a Tree” has been a real treat. Now let’s see if that kiss happens next issue so I can officially start using #TeamGwiles on everything.

(I’m still working on that hashtag).
