Archie comics were my first comics. When I was away at camp, my parents would send me stacks of Archie books that I would tear through and reread all summer long. To this day, I’m still a fan of Archie, the series that sent me down the comic-loving path I follow to this day.
In honor of The CW’s new Riverdale series, I’d like to pay homage to one of Archie Comics’ most iconic images: Veronica, Archie and Betty sharing a milkshake.
So let’s create a perfect malted milkshake, worthy of a place in Pop’s Chok’lit Shoppe. Use whatever flavor you like; your only limit is what’s available in the freezer aisle of your local supermarket.
3 large scoops ice cream of your choosing (chocolate, coffee, vanilla, mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream…)
2 tablespoons sauce of your choosing (hot fudge, coffee syrup, peanut butter, caramel, maple syrup, butterscotch, Nutella…)
⅓ cups whole milk
2 tablespoons malted milk powder
Optional extras: ¼ cup crushed cookies, ½ teaspoon instant coffee powder, 2 tablespoons sprinkles, 2 tablespoons chocolate chips, ½ cup chopped fruit, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup whipping cream
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
- Pour heavy cream and powdered sugar into the bowl of a mixer, beat on medium-high speed. As the cream takes shape, ponder whether you’re Team Betty or Team Veronica.
- Once cream has reached stiff peaks, pop the whipped cream in the fridge.
- To make the milkshake, combine malt powder, milk and sauce in a blender until just combined (if using an additional powder, like cinnamon or dried coffee, add it in with the milk as well). Add ice cream and any extras you like and blend until mixture is fully incorporated and thick.
- Pour shake into a glass, top with generous spoonfuls of whipped cream, 1 cherry and insert the 3 straws. If possible, find two hot individuals who are ridiculously out of your league to share it with.
My flavor combo: coffee ice cream, coffee syrup, ½ teaspoon instant coffee = Extremely delicious coffee shake!
If you end up making a shake, let me know how it tastes and what combo you come up with! Most of all, enjoy!
