Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #15 Review

Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner are teaming up to great success… if you define success as getting choked by a giant tentacled skull thing! We review Robert Venditti’s fantastic space epic which is out this week to determine, is it good?

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #15 (DC Comics)

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #15 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about? The summary reads:

“QUEST FOR THE BLUE LANTERN” part two! Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner’s mission to find the Blue Lanterns brings them to a world on the brink of destruction. How can they find hope in a place devoid of any? Meanwhile, the Green Lantern Corps begins to track down the most dangerous members of the Sinestro Corps, but Guy Gardner flies off to settle his own grudge!

Why does this book matter?

Aside from Venditti’s blockbuster style, the art team he works with keeps the title detailed and event level in quality. He has slowly integrated the Corps into the series and it has been interesting to see how Rebirth has changed them. Yellow Lanterns working with Green Lanterns. GASP!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #15 Review
Every Green Lantern book requires a room filled with varying speciees of Green Lantern.

Splitting this into two stories, Venditti has us cutting between Hal Jordan fighting off an entity of misery on one side of the universe and John Stewart attempting to lead a Yellow/Green Lantern party to find the last remaining evil Yellow Lanterns on the other. Knowing Guy Gardner though, that’s not going to be easy. I can’t say I saw the story going in this direction last issue, which is yet another sign this is a great series. Venditti keeps you on your toes and mixes things up delectably.

Guy’s storyline is particularly interesting as he leaves his ring at home to pick a fight with one of the most badass Yellow Lanterns around; his bravado and inability to follow orders may have helped the Corps, although John Stewart disagrees.

Customary to Green Lantern comics, Venditti tests Hal and Kyle in an interesting way as well as loops in a new color of the Lanterns. There’s no rhyme or reason yet as to why we need the Blue Lantern joining in, but it sets up a fine conclusion and Hal and Kyle nearly don’t make it out of this one.

Ethan Van Sciver brings on the creepy and horrific stuff this go around in marvelous detail. Aliens have all kinds of detail (like one that Guy punches in the face though he’s scaly and covered in horns), but the beast Hal and Kyle face takes the cake. This thing is like a bulbous sack of bones and hair and probably should be put on Halloween horror houses’ list of things to create this year. This leads to an interesting dream sequence of horror for both Kyle and Hal that may not have worked if not for Sciver’s grotesque display.

It can’t be perfect can it?

It’s nice to see John Stewart, but his plan doesn’t push forward enough and serves as a reminder of what he’s up to rather than actually getting the plan underway. True, Guy is putting a wrench in things, but the first two pages serve at worst filler, and at best a way to setup Guy’s actions. Let’s get John’s plan underway already!

Awww, Kyle is choked up.

Is It Good?

Another good issue that tests the mental strength of the Hal Jordan, shows how awesome Guy can be, and reminds us the most imaginative types of stories spin out of Green Lantern.
