The three greatest DC heroes combine in this series, but this week it’s three villains with a twist! Cullen Bunn writes this issue with the art by the impressive Clay Mann and Miguel Mendonca. We delve into its pages to determine, is it good?

So what’s it about? The official summary reads:
“DIVIDED WE FALL” prelude! America is divided! And now a hero has fallen and it may split the country even more. Can Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman stand against riots while defending a bigoted enemy? Don’t miss the beginning of an epic adventure that will test the ideals of our three heroes!
It’s really about Ra’s Al Ghul, Lex, and Cerce meeting up to stop an abomination.
Why does this book matter?
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this issue with Ra’s al Ghul, Lex Luthor and Circe taking over. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. To see these three team up, however much they may hate each other, is a delight.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
Care to get inside his head?
Bunn writes a nearly flawless issue here with captions that get you right inside each of the villains’ heads. The plotting is nearly perfect, introducing each villain and getting the reader acquainted with their point of view before bringing in the next one. The three combine for a battle I had no expected–that ties very well into the series title–making for an interesting team up. The most interesting aspect of the issue is seeing Lex, a man who detests anything not science, deal with a Circe who is basically magic and Ghul who is capable of supernatural feats. By the end if Lex’s belief in science being the only answer isn’t rocked I don’t know what will!
The art is pretty great too. Lex’s armor looks functional and realistic–basically a bit clunky–while Ghul is quite wise looking and Circe just the right amount of evil that makes you feel unnerved. Together they don’t look like they should be in the same room, which suits them disliking each other. There’s some excellent use of shadow and light to convey the magical nature of the strange pits they encounter and you’ve gotta take a look at the beast they’ve formulated.
Lex is a man of science, but for how long?
It can’t be perfect can it?
Save for a stylistic use of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman on the first page the heroes do not appear in their own book. I imagine some will take umbrage with that, though it didn’t bother me! The cover seems to convey they are in the book however, which is your typical untruthful cover, but untrue nonetheless.
Is It Good?
This is an expertly written issue that’s efficient in its delivery and fantastic in the dynamics between the characters. A must read if you care about Lex, Ghul, or Circe. I guarantee it!
