Harley’s Little Black Book #6 Review

After speaking to Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner way back in October, I couldn’t help but get excited for a Lobo/Harley Quinn crossover. And now it’s here! The exciting space adventure (which might include nudity?!) is here, but is it good?

Harley’s Little Black Book #6 (DC Comics)

Harley’s Little Black Book #6 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about? The official summary reads:

Lobo’s back! The Main Man and Harley Quinn have a lot in common-motorcycles and mayhem, for starters-so it’s long past time they found each other! This could be the start of a fraggin’ beautiful friendship…or they could destroy the planet. Or both! It can be two things!

Why does this book matter?

Palmiotti and Conner are great and all, but one of the main reasons to read this book is the art by Simon Bisley. The man is a beast, drawing incredible monsters and, yes, sexually charged women and men; Bisley has a style that’s all his own. It’s gritty, great for monsters and gore, and perfectly suits Harley Quinn.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

DC needs more Lobo in their comics!

The art does not disappoint in this issue. Harley certainly gets her clothes taken off quite a bit, for comedic effect, but also for a bit of fanservice as well. The character is of course written well and the plot shifts and changes enough to keep your attention. She goes from teleporting into a space prison, to being stranded on a uninhabited planet with monsters galore. Luckily for her, Lobo has a healing factor, as he gets bits of himself burned off quite a bit in this issue. I wouldn’t say the art is sexually explicit (or biased), because we do get man bits too as Lobo goes in the buff as well. Bisley gets to draw that, and plenty of monster madness with lots of gore too. The darker tone suits this story with the darkness of space and the scary nighttime place of the alien planet. Overall if you like Bisley’s work (or butts and boobs) you’ll dig the hell out of this.

A lot of the humor has to do with killing, gore or nudity and that suits this character just fine. One of the funnier moments is a surprise near the end that has Harley saying “oops” to an act that is typically more of a big deal than an oopsie moment. Palmiotti and Conner continue to keep the character silly with her rhyming gibberish and her ability to woo animals. She certainly should be out of her element given the space travel and alien monsters, but she’s still true to the character they’ve consistently written all these years. Ultimately, this issue offers a fun story suited for Lobo, with Harley as an annoying sidekick.

I hate how the vacuum of space does that to clothes.

It can’t be perfect can it?

I did find Harley’s rhyming humor a bit annoying at times. The dialogue is actually tricky to get through and there are sections of the book that feel like nonsense. It’s not a consistent issue to begin with, but these parts dragged my attention down.

The general schtick becomes slightly boring too. You might love these characters, but their dynamic is basically annoyance with each other for the most part. Lobo deals with her because she’s a bounty, and Harley goes with the flow. They certainly have some chemistry later in the issue, but generally they’re erratic and annoyed.

Is It Good?

Harley’s Little Black Book #6 is sexy, gorgeous, and all kinds of fun. Bring your dirty sense of humor and you’ll get a kick out of this.

A fun issue that's drawn very well. Come for the gore, sex appeal, and wacky adventure.
Great art from Bisley that suits the story
Crazy adventure with plenty of visual comedy
Some of Harley's rhyming nonsense gets tiring
The dynamic between these characters can grow tiresome
