This book is the 24 of comic books.
Let me explain.
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: John Romita Jr.
Publisher: DC Comics
When 24 came out, I was like “hey this looks good!” It’s got the drunken gravelly voiced yelling guy, and the cute chick from Old School, and the Allstate guy! Guns and explosions and suspense, and only an hour per episode! REAL TIME! OH EM GEE.
Then I watched it. I watched and I enjoyed it, and I was blown away by how over the top and crazy it was, while still being super entertaining. Then I had to wait a week for the next episode and I was like NOPE. GO TO HELL 24. TO. HELL.
That is my exact feeling for All-Star Batman. So good, I could NOT stand it in single issues.
Here’s why it’s great, and why bite sized pieces of it are so annoying.
First: it’s taking Bats out of his comfort zone. Two-Face has an impressive plot, and he needs Bats to help him–and it’s a long, long way from Gotham.
If you enjoyed Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and wished there were more super villains, explosions, mutated Croc people, and super bat gadgets, this is exactly what you should pick up. Batman fights in diners, with a chainsaw in a cornfield, on top of a train…IT’S OUT OF CONTROL AND I LOVED IT.
There’s also a great subplot about Jim Gordon breaking into Wayne Manor to uncover Bruce’s secret identity that is huge in issue two…and THEN DISAPPEARS FOR TWO ISSUES OH MY CHRIST.
Long story short, I loved it. The art is explosive and amazing, the twists and turns and cliffhangers truly are stunning, and Batman and Two-Face’s relationship is almost as adorable as Duke and Bats–and that’s saying something.
If you’re a Bat-fan and you don’t care about continuity–this could fit easily in most Bat-eras, with crazy gadgets and all the rogues showing up to play their part–get this now.
Also, since it’s now collected, you don’t have to sit and wait a month to find out what pouring acid on Batman’s face will do.
I get it: he’s Batman, how much damage can they do? His name is on the book. STILL STRESSFUL.
Go get this right now.
