  • You know it’s going to be a rough funeral when the preacher starts talking smack…
  • …and one of the mourners spits on the grave.
  • Too bad the lady they hated is dead now and can’t watch over all those snakes she kept in her cabin. Now they’re free to go slithering around any funeral they please.
  • It’s nice seeing Bernice and Emmy working together again.
…and now they’re back to arguing.
  • Pretty brave of the guy who spit on Lovey’s grave to speak so fondly of her after the service.
  • *screams at Bernice not to trust the woman who just showed up in Lovey’s cabin*
  • Only Emmy could make a bunch of haints look scared and guilty.
  • For someone who doesn’t approve of ill-gotten powers, Bernice sure looks tempted about the prospect of a getting some of her own.

The Verdict

I love the way Tyler Crook draws snakes. After a series full of misshapen beasts and terrifying spirits, those creepy reptiles continue to be the scariest thing he conjures up.

I also love that Bernice is getting so much more page time, although the rift between her and Emmy has gone from shocking to redundant. The end of the issue makes it seem like we’re finally going to move forward into the actual conflict, but part of me fears that next month’s installment might just be another issue of them fighting with each other.

Also, the behavior of the mourners of the funeral is a little hard to interpret. All snarkiness from my initial observations aside, I’m not sure how people can so blatantly celebrate a woman’s death one minute and look so crestfallen about it the next.

All that being said, the scene with Emmy and Bernice working together to stop a giant snake attack is pretty awesome. I also love how Cullen Bunn is tying in some of the old Harrow County mythology we learned a few issues ago into this new conflict. It still breaks my heart to see Emmy and Bernice at each other’s throats, but at this point, I’m more than ready for them to either work things out or start working each other over.

Is it good?
Another beautiful and well written issue, but the narrative is bogged down by a redundant setup.
Of all the scary things he draws, Tyler Crook's snakes may be the ones that make my skin crawl the most.
