The trippiest comic on store shelves continues this week as Cave Carson must stop…well, doomsday. No biggy!

Why does this book matter?
Michael Avon Oeming has a unique style that’s retro as hell which has not disappointed for a single issue of this series. Jon Rivera has been plotting the series well and just came off an excellent Superman flashback issue. Without his eye can Cave save the day? I’m itching to find out!

What is up? What is down?!
Another visually arresting issue in a series that’s hard to put down for the sheer detail and weirdness on every page. Take for instance the villains below, with their eyes torn away to reveal blue freakishness. The use of color in general for this series has been exceptional and Nick Filardi dazzles here. One has to wonder if the imagery in this issue could have even been done 20 years ago (this has to be digital, right?) with an incredibly trippy background (see above) that mixes colors to create a visual illusion like effect. A double page layout later in the issue continues to use trippy and colorful backgrounds, this time with panels stretching towards each other with hexagonal patterns behind them. As if the characters are in space, Oeming draws these panels amongst the stars which helps add a gravity to what the characters are talking about. The brain-like beast that’s floating about in the issue is also an awesome visual…thing. It’s at once scary, interesting, and bizarre. The colorful yellows and pinks in its tendrils adds to the creepy quality of it.
If you asked me what the hell is going on I might not be able to answer you. That might sound like a negative, but with Cave’s eye missing and the visual insanity going on in each page I can’t help but think that’s part of it. There are also a few bits of funny moments (Aunt Flo’s country tampons is a good scene) and Rivera keeps the action moving. Cave’s speech to motivate his team is a highlight as it showcases his to-the-point nature. When you’ve written in a geological mentor who also happens to be Cave’s psychedelic guru you know you’re in for some trippy s--t. Rivera delivers that trippy s--t and then some.
It can’t be perfect can it?
All that said, I’m not entirely sure what is going on and where it’s all going. I’ve lost the thread of what the mission even is, which is made even worse when the characters start talking alternate realities. It crossed my mind the trippy art might be running too rampantly in the obtuse direction, which may be exacerbating the confusion I’m having. Because of the confusing nature of the story it’s hard to care about what is happening.
Is It Good?
A visually striking and jaw-dropping book–you gotta check this out simply to see how insane it all can get. Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye is the definitive acid trip in comics.
