Batgirl #11 Review

The “Son of Penguin” arc wraps up in Batgirl in an epic fashion, showing how a unique villain can use today’s modern technology for evil. Batgirl, the only DC Comics superhero who knows how to use Snapchat and Uber (or at least their equivalents in the DC universe), has to fight Penguin’s son using Wi-Fi against him.

Here’s the official synopsis of the issue from DC:

“Son of Penguin” finale! Batgirl races to free Burnside from Ethan’s plot…but has Burnside already changed too much to be saved? Even if she manages to save the day, will Barbara ever be able to truly go home again?

For those who lost track, the “Son of Penguin” storyline kicked off in Batgirl #7, with Barbara Gordon surprised to find herself in a relationship with Ethan Cobblepot, the Penguin’s son. But she soon learned that he was using his Vicform app for nefarious purposes while also turning her into Public Enemy Number One in Burnside. At the end of Batgirl #10, Ethan revealed that he has named himself Blacksun with the ultimate goal of taking down his father’s criminal empire and replacing it with his own.

Batgirl #11 Review

In the finale, it’s up to Batgirl to derail Ethan’s goals, but she has to figure out how to stop his wi-fi mind control first.

Writer Hope Larson has successfully turned Batgirl into a series to cater to younger readers who don’t want superheroes who only fight in tights and with their fists. She’s turned the series into a fun book where Barbara’s life outside the purple and yellow Batgirl costume is just as important as her cape-crusading adventures.

Batgirl #11 Review

“Son of Penguin” brought these two together, where she has to use her technological know-how to get out of this sticky situation. This is a book that takes advantage of its audiences’ familiarity with technology and puts it to good use. Larson lets you know that if you can figure out a way to block your enemy’s Wi-Fi signal, you too can be Batgirl!

Batgirl #11 Review

Chris Wildgoose’s pencils on Batgirl have just been awesome. I love the way he makes the most out of a single panel, squeezing multiple actions in compact spaces. He also keeps chases in the book exciting with the help of vibrant colors from Mat Lopes.

Batgirl is one of the monthlies to climb to the $3.99 price point from DC and both #10 and #11 have proven it deserves it.

Is It Good?
Son of Penguin wraps up with a climax that makes Batgirl use all of her tech know-how to save Burnside in a fun way younger readers will love.
A fun last issue for the arc, full of exciting chases and quick-thinking. Batgirl is a Gotham MacGyver with technology.
Chris Wildgoose's art and Mat Lopes' vibrant colors are perfect for the modern superhero.
The cliff-hanger feels a little tacked-on after the strong ending.
