The Skinny

Nadia is on her way to the villain’s trap, but of course she has a back-up plan for her back-up plan. And maybe a guardian devil in her back pocket.

The rest of G.I.R.L. finally comes up with the grossest plan possible to remove the bomb from the head of Ying, the other Red Room refugee that was sent to off Nadia. Then they’ll just have to survive the nerve gas-tossing gunmen outside, but in superheroics, even when you win, sometimes you lose.

The Lowdown

Unstoppable Wasp #6 is paced well and builds tension all the way up to the climax, but the finer details suffer more than in previous issues. Writer Jeremy Whitley once again misses the opportunity to differentiate the main characters from each other, despite starting off well with some identifying caption boxes.

It’s mostly downhill from there, though, as the physicist starts doing some biology and there are just too many plot holes and quick fixes. Why didn’t Nadia whip out the doohickey sooner? No one thought of the skin gambit after being up all night, trying to think of something? At least they tested the gauntlet before shoving it into Ying’s brain.

So yes, there is some consistency with previous issues — the girls are careful, Nadia is optimistic and her enthusiasm still makes those around her better people. There’s just less of all that. Elsa Charretier draws her best action sequences of the series, though the lines aren’t as smooth as in issue #5. Megan M. Wilson’s colors are slightly duller, too, but not enough to shift the story’s tone.

The Upshot

Unstoppable Wasp #6 is a somewhat disappointing conclusion to a fun yet tense story, with a major cliffhanger that can only serve to bring Nadia further down. The core traits of what made this book special are still there, but they’re starting to fade. Here’s hoping the creative team can recapture some magic before this volume inevitably ends.

Is it good?
It's good, but not as good as it has been. Let's see where the creative team can take it from here.
Nadia is still positive, and always has a back-up plan
Art is relatively consistent, though looks a little rushed
Too many plot holes and miraculous saves
Nadia probably deserved an unqualified win after what she's been through
7.5
Good
