Suicide Squad #20 begins a new chapter after the death/disappearance of Rick Flag. Amanda Waller is looking to promote a member of the Suicide Squad to lead.
There’s a lot of focus around June Moon and Killer Croc. It’s really nice to see the Suicide Squad try and live normal lives without constantly being behind bars or on a mission. Seeing Killer Croc help June Moon to prepare for job hunting in the real world is the most unusual but fun thing to see, especially from Croc. I’d also like to point out that it’s nice to see the pair of June and Croc together as a couple. They could have easily chosen to go with the Suicide Squad film pairing of June Moon and Rick Flag, but they didn’t, which is refreshing.
There’s definitely some resemblance to the Suicide Squad movie and comics–the team line-up, for instance, is pretty much exactly the same. So making June Moon and Rick Flag a couple could have been easy but it’s nice to see a little change there. When I first saw the comparisons to the Suicide Squad comics and movie I was a little skeptical that it would just be trying to jump on the hype of the movie, but issues like this one completely changed my mind.
Even though the focus is on Croc and Moon, we do get some great stuff by the other team members. Every member explains why they should or should not be the new leader of the team. Katana actually shined more than most in this issue and it actually made me want more of her. I hope she gets more page time now that Flag is out of the picture. Harley Quinn is showing some interesting signs of being distraught after losing Rick Flag. Not since the Joker have we really seen Harley get this way. And in this case it’s not even “Mad Love;” she just grew genuine feelings for Flag.
This issue slows down a bit compared to the last few, which isn’t a bad thing at all. I loved the pace of this issue. It’s a love story about a monster and a witch who try to live like normal people in this world and don’t care what they look like and who sees them. The coupling of Killer Croc and June Moon is a comic book couple that will go down in history as one of the best couples in comics.
The writing in this issue is wonderfully crafted by Rob Williams. I truly believe he knocked this one out of the park. Even when a character has one line it’s an unforgettable one. Stjepan Sejic had some great art in this book that popped right off the page. I couldn’t stop staring at some pages with Amanda Waller and Harley Quinn because it looked so good. His art was probably my favorite part of this issue and I hope we get more like this.
