Another San Diego Comic Con is in the books. 2017’s convention was one for the ages, with tons of announcements–so many that it is nearly impossible to keep up with in real time. There were of course some major standouts amidst the chaos:
Comics
Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. are making Superman: Year One
Frank Miller was a surprise at the Master Class panel, where he made the announcement that he is writing Superman: Year One. “This is something I wanted to do ever since, for so long it’s embarrassing,” he confessed.
The graphic novel is set to be 100+ pages. A release date wasn’t discussed, but John Romita Jr. said, pointing at Miller, “As soon as he’s ready, I’m ready.”
Mark Waid and Chris Samnee are taking over Captain America with issue #695
Determined to bring back the Captain America we all know and love, it was announced Mark Waid and Chris Samnee will offer their take on the iconic hero for Marvel Legacy, coming November 2017.
Duke Thomas will star in Batman: The Signal
The announcement of Batman: The Signal was made during the ‘Dark Nights: Metal and Dark Matter’ panel. The Signal will be an ongoing series starring Scott Snyder-created Duke Thomas, a character who first appeared in Batman Vol. 2 #21 (August 2013), written by DC Talent Workshop graduate Tony Patrick.
Movies/Television
Trailers, trailers, trailers
Of course, one of the biggest attractions of comic con is the trailers! This year did not disappoint, as we saw new trailers for Justice League, Thor: Ragnarok, The Defenders, season 3 of Fear the Walking Dead, Stranger Things season 2, an IMAX trailer for Marvel/ABC’s Inhumans, the first footage of the Rocko’s Modern Life reboot, and a lot more.
Captain Marvel will be set in the 90s and feature Skrulls
There was plenty of news coming out of the MCU at Comic-Con, but a particularly interesting piece of information came when Marvel announced that the upcoming Captain Marvel movie will effectively act as a prequel to the rest of the cinematic universe, as it’s set in the 1990s. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury for the movie, sans eye patch. Also of note is the movie will feature the Skrulls as the main bad guys, a surprise since the IP was thought to be owned by Fox through their Fantastic Four license.
As discussed at the Feminist Marvels panel, Captain Marvel has a rocky history, so this is a great opportunity for Marvel Studios to set higher expectations and aspirations for the character by building a strong backstory.
Wonder Woman 2 officially announced
Though it should come as no surprise, since Wonder Woman was critically acclaimed and smashed records on its way to becoming the biggest hit of the summer, Wonder Woman 2 is officially happening. No word yet on a release date or information on who is directing the film, though Patty Jenkins has expressed interest.
Iron Fist is getting a second season
In an announcement that seemed to surprise star Finn Jones on stage during the Defenders panel, Iron Fist is getting a second season.
While the show has potential and the character itself seems to be an integral part of the upcoming Defenders show based on the first episode, reactions to the first season were tepid at best.
Ant-Man and the Wasp casts Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne
Two big new additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe are here, following an announcement that Michelle Pfeiffer will be playing the original Wasp Janet van Dyne, and Laurence Fishburne will be taking up the mantle of Giant Man. It was also announced that a more obscure character, The Ghost, will be making an appearance in the film as well.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is directed by Peyton Reed and will once again star Paul Rudd in the titular role. The movie opens July 6, 2018.
Doctor Doom movie is in the works
“Two words: Doctor. Doom.”
Doctor Doom is coming to the big screen. Announced during the Legion panel at SDCC, the movie has Fargo show runner Noah Hawley involved. The Hollywood Reporter says Hawley is developing the movie and hopes to direct as well.
The Fantastic Four movies have historically been a train wreck, so expectations must be tempered, but Fox has a few surprising hits under their belt as of late between Deadpool and Logan, so who knows.
Other
Hasbro unveiled its new Marvel Legends figure line, including Apocalypse Build-a-Figure
Several figures were unveiled, including Wolverine, Deadpool, X-23, Black Panther, Lizard, and a BAF Apocalypse set to come out in fall 2018.
