Like in many westerns, some of the best stories open with characters screaming in pain and the reader attempting to figure out what is going on. That was my experience with All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #8 which amped up the excitement.

Why does this matter?

Gerry Duggan has definitely kept the “All-New” aspect of this series a priority, as each of these characters has plenty of hidden backstories and new outlooks on life. Still they’re friends to the end as Star-Lord proves by attempting to save Rocket’s life in this issue.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #8 Review
[RECORD SCRATCH] Yep, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I got like this.

The Raptors have poisoned Rocket and damaged the engines of Star-Lord’s ship. What’s a hero to do, just stand around? Nope! Duggan has Star-Lord go full hero in this issue with some surprising and fun results. Armed with one Nega-Band and an urgency to save his friend, Duggan has Star-Lord go on a one man mission to save Rocket. This leads him directly inside the Raptors ship and knocking skulls with another Nega-Band wearing baddy. Overall this issue is quick but effective, with plenty of action and a few surprises too.

Outside of Star-Lord, Duggan has Groot do his cute and lovable thing and writes a surprise heroic turn for Gamora that builds towards a funny moment. Ultimately this issue reinforces the bond these characters have between each other, but also reminds us Star-Lord can hold his own.

The art by Marcus To keeps the action clear and impactful. Groot is a particular highlight as his cuteness is always on point with great inks to keep him defined. The big laugh in this issue has a nice build up with a solid three panel page that goes directly into a smash cut of the rather ridiculous looking scene. It’s the kind of scene that is at once funny, but also sort of bonding.

He’s a bona fide superhero.

It can’t be perfect can it?

This is one of those action packed issues that serves to entertain, but not get the characters anywhere new. It’s a one off for sure, especially since Star-Lord ditches a power up that’d be neat to see on him later. An entertaining journey, but upon reflection doesn’t add a whole lot to the recurring story.

Is It Good?

A fun issue that Star-Lord fans should not miss. The dude seriously shows off he’s a grade A hero, which you don’t see much of these days.
