Sometimes you gotta make a deal with some aliens. Maybe it will work out, maybe it won’t. But when there’s technology to be had, and money to be made, you know well and good that the United States government is going to be all over that opportunity like Trump on pageant contestants. I can’t speak for Kaplan’s view on Trump, but he seems to agree that the U.S. would strike a deal if its profitable in his new series Port of Earth.

What’s going on in this issue?

Port of Earth #2 begins with the director of the ESA (Earth Security Agency) being interviewed, almost interrogated about the deal between us and the aliens. The director is very firm that we got the better end of the deal. Human interest groups like the ACLU were kept out of negotiations with the Consortium, because you know, there’s no money there, and money is king over human rights all day, every day.

The ones that were directly involved in striking the deal are the ones who would sell souls today if they could. Companies like Exxon Mobil and Halliburton are sitting on the Board of Directors of the ESA. So you can tell the direction the story is going when the higher ups are in charge of the human interest.

Sounds like a lot of political BS!

It is political, but Kaplan does an incredible job with the origin of the deal. The opening pages with the director’s interview is easily the best part of this issue. At the end of the first issue, Mac and Rice are chasing down a rogue alien that left the port and is now a suspect in a murder involving a human. The pace picks up as the pair encounters the alien and attempt to capture it. Rice is by the book, where Mac is going to get the job done, no matter what measures he must take. And he wants to take down the alien!

Yes, Port of Earth #2 is a very entertaining book. I like action packed books as much as the next guy, but the interview drama detailing the constructs of the deal stood out to me. Sometimes you get that second issue slump feel, but this issue isn’t like that and it elevates the story. Mac and Rice are still the formulaic cops, but now they have rubbed elbows with the alien visitors, I hope to see more depth to them sooner than later.

Andrea Mutti’s art gives Port of Earth a high-quality B-movie feel to it. The alien trying to elude Mac and Rice is sinister looking. The ESA agents look like they are right out of an 80s sci-fi flick. His detail to scenery is incredible, he makes even the nastiest sewer look sexy. Vladamir Popov’s colors complement the artwork. You can almost feel the grit coming off the pages.

Buy this book! I dug the first issue, but was nervous to see what Kaplan was going to do with the story. He had a good setup and I am pleased that he didn’t drop the ball with it. The political drama is better than I expected, and we also have some action! And it all clicks, nothing feels forced. There is some seedy stuff that is about to happen behind the scenes at the ESA and I can’t wait to see it all unfold.

Solid dramatic elements
Fast paced action
Quality storytelling
Mac and Rice still need to break the basic cop mold for me
