Doomsday Clock has been one of the most tantalizing event series to come around in some time. Not only does it bridge two worlds, but it serves as the first Watchmen sequel ever. Geoff Johns and Gary Frank have huge shoes to fill as they carry characters like Ozymandias, The Comedian, and Rorschach over to the DC universe. Hell, it has even inspired people to make videos about Rorschach making pancakes! The question arises though, didn’t Rorschach die at the end of The Watchmen? Who is this pretender? Geoff Johns has hinted that this character’s identity is a huge deal and after two issues there are a few clues to set his identity straight.
SPOILERS AHEAD for Doomsday Clock (and Watchmen).
The first tidbit Johns revealed was this new version of Rorschach liking pancakes:
Wait, what? As we know from the original Watchmen #1, beans is what the man likes!
Later in Doomsday Clock #2 we find our new version of Rorschach enjoying Batman’s flapjacks.
It appears Batman ignored Alfred’s breakfast and Rorschach decided to dig in.
Then we have Rorschach showing his hand, which reveals he’s not pasty white like the previous version but African American:
And then finally, we learn in Doomsday Clock #2 his real name may be Reggie:
I’ve scoured the Wikis and internet and can’t seem to find a single Watchmen character with that name. The only potential character I can think of is Bernie since he’s not too old and is African American, but he died in a nuclear blast in the original series. That said, he was in direct contact with Rorscach at one point and he also loves comic books.
I’d like to think this is the new Rorschach.
The only other detail we have so far is a quick scene where Ozymandias basically explains this new Rorschach is different and very much more dangerous:
What do you think? Are there any details we missed and do you have a theory?
It’s pretty clear Geoff Johns is having fun dropping a detail or two in each issue so expect us to update this January 24th when even more details emerge when issue #3 hits comic book stands.
