The conclusion to Kyle Higgins’ other-world tale is finally here!

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

From the DC synopsis:

It all ends here! As Lex Luthor feverishly attempts to repower Superman, the Crusaders are closing in on the Resistance, aiming to shut them down for good! Meanwhile, Nightwing makes a deal with the devil in an attempt to save his son’s life…and it may cost him everything.

What’s the skinny?

It all comes down to this. Dick Grayson has made a deal with Kate Kane, leader of the Crusaders, to get himself and Jake out of the country and out of harm’s way. But in the process he’s betrayed the mother of his child, Superman and his former teammates the Teen Titans. Worst of all, Dick’s betrayed, tricked and lied to the one person who still trusts and loves him unconditionally, Jake.

Not everyone within the Crusaders is keen on letting Dick go either, but Kate Kane is a woman of her word. With Lex Luthor being the only person capable of using Jake’s genetic makeup to create a cure, they don’t need Jake to stop the cure anymore, just the man behind it. Thus Dick speeds off to the closest international airport he can find while Kate Kane and her forces begin their assault against Superman and Lex’s hideout.

While Superman, Lois, Lex’s robot army and the Titans battle Kate Kane and the Crusaders, Dick has a very different but arguably just as difficult battle on his hands. Jake’s turned Dick’s own ideologies against him and questioned the core convictions of who Dick Grayson used to be.

What’s the catch?

In reviewing the earlier issues I voiced a concern that I didn’t know how Higgins would resolve everything within six issues. So while this is a great issue and a fantastic series overall, the story felt a bit rushed in wrapping things up. I would have loved one more issue, especially given how Lex’s story played out at the end.

Oh and how does Kate Kane managed to shoot Flash while he’s speeding through her troops causing mayhem? I can’t wrap my head around that one. Minor nerd gripe, don’t mind me.

Is it good?

After five issues and six months of build up, we’ve finally reached the conclusion to Kyle Higgins’ six-part series. Despite feeling like some things were a bit rushed at the end, I still immensely enjoyed the ride. But man do I wish Higgins and his editor had opted for another issue. Lex Luthor has always been one of the most fun and interesting characters within the DC universe. The manner in which his part in this story resolved itself left me begging for more and he isn’t the only one either. Lois Lane was another character that was commanding my attention every time she appeared. I love the idea of Lois as a Blue Lantern and will be starting my social media campaign shortly to see it happen in canon.

Coming from a family of divorced parents, the dynamic of Jake, Dick and Kory resonated with me. I don’t know whether or not this is as personal for Higgins as it is for me, but he nailed the message regardless. At the end of the day, all that matters is you love and support one another.

There’s a lot of different ways you could interpret the message Higgins is trying to push here. Regardless of what you take away from it, it’s abundantly clear that the tone of this story reflects a lot of the issues we’re struggling with as a society. The second amendment popped into my head more than once when the characters debated who and who shouldn’t be able to have powers, which are for all intents and purposes — a mirror of gun law issues. A lot of people worry that our society is becoming too militarized and there’s a huge debate across the country on the excessive use of force by police. The Crusaders’ visit to Dick’s house and subsequent confrontation with Alfred Pennyworth is a perfect parallel to many of the news stories we see today about excessive force.

I think what I appreciate the most about the parallels between Higgins story and our world today is that it makes you question things. Dick Grayson is an upstanding hero that the public worshipped, but in the end what he was doing wasn’t right for everyone. Higgins challenged our perception of the man behind the mask of Nightwing and I hope it makes readers challenge their perception of what’s going on in our country today. Took a good hard look at what you believe in and ask yourself if the people on the other side of the argument are really so different from yourself. Jake’s love for his father and his desire to do good helped bring a man around to a different way of thinking. A little more love for the people we don’t see eye-to-eye with, would probably do this messed up world a hell of a lot of good.

Good
Is it good?
As per usual, the art is fantastic. No surprise there.
Lois Lane and Lex Luthor are two supporting characters that nearly stole the show.
Lots of parallels to problems we face as a society today.
Conclusion felt a bit rushed. Would have been great to have one more issue.
