Honey Badger and Deadpool go on a kill-happy adventure.
I did not know what I was missing until I picked up All-New Wolverine Vol. 3. Then I read Vol. 4 and couldn’t believe the quality. Today issue #31 drops and, yep, it’s another great chapter! You’d think these coincidences would end eventually.
So what’s it about?
Read our preview.
Why does this matter?
Tom Taylor knows good dialogue and interesting ways to bring out the best in these characters. If you like character-driven stories, it’s hard to not love what he’s doing here and it feels very important. Down the road we’ll look back on this series and realize he created something special similar to the greats developing our favorite heroes of today.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
I guess she has him on speed dial.
This is a super fun done-in-one adventure with Gabby aka Honey Badger getting dragged into a mission because of her pet wolverine, Jonathan. Before she runs off with Jonathan, Wolverine remembers to put his voice modulator around his neck, giving the tale a shot of wacky animal talking fun. Then Deadpool shows up. Needless to say, there are hijinks and laughs to be had while reading this one. Deadpool shares his chloroform with Gabby, breaking and entering is committed, and even adorable animals are involved. Adorable animals who want to kill! The pace of the story is excellent and the story is always entertaining.
Marco Failla draws this issue with David Lopez on colors and their dynamic together is special. Failla has a thin line that’s detailed and realistic while Lopez uses a lot of bright colors to amp up the humor. Jonathan is cute as hell in his long but plump body and his super serious expressions help sell the comedy when he threatens Deadpool. A candidate for funniest comic book page of the year drops about midway through the issue involving a recurring background across five panels. The scene has a reminiscent feel, not unlike a hilarious moment in Austin Powers but it has the added oomph of Deadpool to make it hilarious.
Man his arm must be strong to be able to hold that dude up.
It can’t be perfect can it?
Actual Wolverine fans might not like to know she’s barely in this one. She pops up in the opening and the end, but this is strictly a Deadpool/Gabby adventure.
Is It Good?
I was laughing out loud reading this issue. Tom Taylor should be writing one of the various Deadpool titles because the guy gets his sense of humor perfectly. Grab this just for a fun one-shot read.
