Also, family reunions aren’t always easy.

First Read Reactions

  • Not sure if April’s parents are brave, stupid, or both for trying to film all the craziness around them.
  • Someone should tell Agent Bishop that he loses the right to hold badass poses when his badassery is the result of mind controlling a much larger/stronger mutant.
  • Splinter is kind of a dick now.
  • I’m not a huge fan of Jennika, but I really don’t think she’d be swayed by such a contrived Hallmark moment.
  • Baxter Stockman may be a colossal douche, but at least he’s keeping busy with beneficial projects.
  • Gotta love a Mexican standoff in New York.

The Verdict

The ending to this issue is great, mostly because it promises what should be one heck of a good battle next month. Otherwise, however, TMNT #79 isn’t all that good.

While it’s cool seeing the Triceratons blow stuff up and Bishop go psycho, it’s still not clear what role April’s parents are going to play besides putting themselves in constant danger out of a sense of journalistic duty/nostalgia. It’s heavily implied they’ll play a bigger role down the road, but for now, it doesn’t seem to fit.

Even more disappointing is the meeting between Splinter and his sons. The dialogue starts off well, but quickly devolves into stilted sniping before being capped off by a highly dubious betrayal.

Thankfully, the action in this issue saves it from being a real clunker. Let’s hope that next month’s installment can help make up for things and send this otherwise fantastic story arc out with a bang.

Lots of great action along with one heck of a good cliffhanger.
The role of April's parents feels forced/unnecessary.
The confrontation between the Turtles and Splinter is a big letdown.
