Pretty much every issue of Aquaman by Dan Abnett is an incredibly well put together issue with usually great art too. Sadly, this issue is the exception. The artwork is not good (though it’s not awful) and the story itself is really basic. Overall this issue feels like it’s just there to fill in a month while the artwork for the rest of the series is completed.
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
“King Rath: Secret Origin”! Even after a decisive victory is won by Aquaman and the resistance, King Rath tightens his grip on Atlantis by unleashing an ancient magic that has not been seen for thousands of years. But little is known about the true origin of the man who calls himself king…until now! Witness the shocking origin of the nefarious King Rath in this special issue!
Tell me about it!
Sometimes pencils and inks can be saved by the colors on a book. This issue is not one of them. The faces on characters look awful and just do not work. This issue could have easily have been integrated into another issue as a short flashback for Rath and the ending few pages in with the rest of it. There was no reason for it to be its own issue aside from to stall time for the rest of the issue to be pencilled and finished.
One of the good parts of the issue was the presence of Kadaver who is a cool villain Abnett’s made. It’s a shame that he decided to kill him off in what I could easily call the worst issue of the run in order to make mutated King Rath seem like a bigger deal.
Overall I might have enjoyed the issue more if it had been by a better artist but comics are collaborative so if one side is bad then it drags it all down.
