Dive inside Hunter Zolomon and his origins as well as the mystery of where he’s been for the past nine years.

Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. That is my complete and utter reaction to this issue. From picking up to one of the many Geoff Johns dropped plot points to having Hunter be center stage, The Flash #46 just shocks and awes and wows like not too many recent Flash issues have. If you liked Geoff Johns’ era of Flash writing, this is a great issue for you. Joshua Williamson does some stellar work while Scott Kolins brings in art that is in the top tier of all the Flash artists of all time. Seeing Kolins drawing Hunter, a character he designed, and his backstory is just the best thing they could have done.

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“THE ROAD TO FLASH WAR!” Wally West is overwhelmed by fragments from his past! With his protégé’s psyche falling apart, Barry Allen races around the DCU calling in every favor possible to save his shattered family. Meanwhile, Hunter Zolomon’s sinister machinations tip over the first domino in what might prove to be the end of everything for The Flash!

Tell me about it!

The Reverse Flashes of both the major Flashes finally meet on page. This has been something that’s been building since 2009; for nine years this plot point has been hanging by a thread ever since The Flash Rebirth in 2009. I’m also glad that this issue starts with a recap of Hunter’s origin as there’s going to be a lot of people who have never been introduced to the character before. The plot diving into Hunter and Eobard’s friendship is really interesting to see and the reaction to Hunter seeing what happened to his new friend is heartbreaking. Also it confirms that the Time Judge that appears during Dastardly Death of the Rogues was Hunter Zolomon in disguise the entire time.

Choosing Scott Kolins to draw this issue was a fantastic move. There is no one better suited to reintroducing Hunter’s origins than the man who originally drew them. Kolins’ layouts are fantastic and flow extremely well and his art scheme for the whole issue looks great. Everyone looks fantastic and the only small issue I have with it is that Iris’ hair has gone short again.

The Flash #46
Is it good?
A very good issue reintroducing Hunter with the character's designer on art.
Williamson picks up a dropped Geoff Johns plot point incredibly well.
Scott Kollins is still at the top of his game and this issue really shows that.
The characterisation is all completely on point.
Hunter and Eobard's friendship is something that could easily be explored even more.
Some slight holes in the plot such as how Hunter got his powers back but I imagine it'll be revealed later.

Great
