Judging by the Cover – 5/23/18 new releases

Dave and Eric share their favorite covers from the week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in-a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media and Content Manager David Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Dave’s Picks:

Iron Man #600
Art by Alex Ross

Judging by the Cover - 5/23/18 new releasesI love the simplicity of the cover by Alex Ross as it highlights the spectacle of the shiny suit, but also the ease at which he can tear through metal. The classic look to the armor is a nice touch too and the shiny nature of the suit screams expensive.

The Flash #47
Art by Francesco Mattina

Judging by the Cover - 5/23/18 new releasesAnybody got any electricity I can borrow? This image is filled with energy and the position of the boot on the left is a great way to subtly introduce the villain. The use of blur is also impressive and it’s yet another example of computers improving the comic book art format.

Adventure Time: Beginning Of The End #1
Art by Corey Booth

Judging by the Cover - 5/23/18 new releasesThe magical realm these characters exhibit is on display with what looks like colored pencil which gives the cover a warm and inviting look. The eclectic mix of stone, crystal, grass, and water gives the environment an otherworldly look. This is a comedic book, but also a wild fantasy and the cover shows this well.

Eric’s Picks:

Old Man Hawkeye #5
Art by Marco Checchetto

Judging by the Cover - 5/23/18 new releases

Sometimes I know I’m going to pick a cover the instant I first see it, and this is one of those times. This is one of the most fearsome symbiotes I’ve seen in a long time. I love that it’s a different take–the wings, claws, and spiked spine are all intimidating. The perspective from Hawkeye’s point-of-view with his bow at the ready is also cool. There are a lot of nice details here, and Marco Checchetto manages to make them all gel together instead of looking too busy.

You Are Deadpool #4
Art by Rahzzah

Judging by the Cover - 5/23/18 new releases

I like the sense of joy to this piece. A lot of Deadpool art steers toward sarcasm or violence, but this Rahzzah cover references pop culture while maintaining a sense of fun. The pixel block version of Wade is adorable, and this is an arcade game I would like to play.

Black Panther #1
Art by Artgerm

Judging by the Cover - 5/23/18 new releases

It’s no secret that Black Panther’s supporting cast is every bit as cool as he is. His sister Shuri is particularly cool, as is this cover by Artgerm. I love the subtle expression on Shuri’s face, and the sheer confidence of her gaze. From the shine of the tusk earrings to the hatching on the birds, there’s a lot to appreciate here.
