The Terrifics #4 review: Doc Shaner makes an absolutely amazing series debut

A Giant Space Squid?! Space trash rooms?! Plastic Man and Metamorpho argue?!

The Terrifics #3 introduces Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner onto the team as he starts taking over art duties on the book. And he is just the best. Shaner is absolutely the best artist for the book as he draws everyone incredibly well and gives the book a real fun feeling thanks to its almost cartoony nature. Lemire forms a fun plot for the journey to Bgztl rather than have them go straight there and continues to give great character interactions between the main cast of characters.

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“THE GIRL FROM BGZTL”! Return with the Terrifics to the Phantom World! As our heroes continue their trek through the multiverse (dark or otherwise) to find a cure for the condition that binds them together, their journey brings them to the home planet of Phantom Girl. This is one tearful reunion you do not want to miss! Plus, a giant space squid attacks! That’s right, a giant space squid!

The Terrifics #4 review: Doc Shaner makes an absolutely amazing series debut

Shaners Plas is perfect and anyone who disagrees can fight me.

Tell me about it!

Shaner’s art is exactly what this title needs: it’s fun, cute and he’s able to do wonders with layouts and the expressions of the characters. The characters that truly shine under Shaner are definitely Plastic Man (who Shaner himself has a strong affinity for) and Metamorpho. He does wonders with different forms that Plastic Man can take and has a great panel where Plas and Metamorpho are playing rock, paper, scissors and they both turn their hands into scissors. The facial expressions for Plas alone are great as Shaner shows all forms of emotions, from him being slightly annoyed all the way to smug joy as he rolls along as a giant ball.

Shaner’s passion for the character really shows in the creativity he uses when he draws him. Metamorpho is also drawn great and Shaner makes full use of his powers to show him off. Mister Terrific has a cool effect on his face where his T disguise is formed entirely out of dots, the term being pointillism, when his face is shown no matter the size. When he’s further away the dots shrink in size but continue in consistency while when he’s closer up they’re more noticeable. Lemire also continues to write fun team dynamics especially between Plastic Man and Metamorpho. The two are constantly bickering and making jabs at each other in ways that make sense for the characters and their clashing personalities.
