Eleven Easter Eggs You Might’ve Missed in ‘Deadpool 2’

Think you know ‘Deadpool 2’ up and down? Test your knowledge of the film with our list of Easter eggs.

When your main character is as motor-mouthed as Deadpool, a joke here and a reference there are bound to fly over your head. But there are far more Easter eggs planted in Deadpool 2 (now available via streaming or Super Duper Cut DVD) than meets the eye. The following are some references you might’ve missed the first time around:

1. Wade’s wearing the same Hawaiian shirt as Chunk from The Goonies during the couch scene

Thankfully, we didn’t have to witness Wade do the infamous truffle shuffle while “shirt cocking it, toddler style.”

2. Brad Pitt makes a cameo in the movie as The Vanisher

Pitt had originally met with director David Leitch to discuss playing the part of Cable (before Josh Brolin eventually landed the role); there was even concept art made in Pitt’s likeness.

“We had a great meeting with Brad, he was incredibly interested in the property. Things didn’t work out schedule-wise,” said Leitch in an interview with Collider. He’s a fan, and we love him, and I think he would’ve made an amazing Cable.”

Later, when writing the part of the Vanisher, co-writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese thought the X-Force parachuting scene was the “perfect idea for a celebrity cameo.” Per The Hollywood Reporter:

And then we thought, ‘Who is the hardest get in Hollywood? Let’s call him.'”

Reynolds reached out personally to Pitt, whose children loved the first Deadpool movie.

“He immediately said yes,” recalls Wernick. “It was a pinch-me moment.”

3. In the scene where Cable first appears in the past (our present), one of the rednecks talking about toilet paper is Matt Damon.

He’s credited as “Dickie Greenleaf,” the name of a character involved with Damon’s in The Talented Mr. Ripley.

The other redneck is Alan Tudyk of Firefly, Dodgeball, Serenity and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story fame.

4. The illuminated rooftop sign behind Deadpool in the beginning of the film is the Chinese version of Deadpool’s name

According to a Redditor with a flavorful username, the sign roughly translates to “dead warrior.” Close enough.

5. The knob on Cable’s gun goes from zero to eleven instead of zero to ten — a reference to the movie This is Spinal Tap.

“Well, it’s one louder, isn’t it? It’s not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You’re on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you’re on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?”

6. Stan Lee did technically have a cameo in the movie

7. In the convoy fight scene between Deadpool and Cable, Deadpool refers to Cable as “One-Eyed-Willy,” a reference to Josh Brolin’s first film, The Goonies

It’s also because, well, Cable has one eye. And one-eyed-willy is also a euphemism for a penis. So he’s calling Cable a dick. So many layers on that joke, Deadpool.

8. The voice of Juggernaut was none other than Ryan Reynolds himself

Oh, and according to screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, all those mid-credit scenes are canon. Meaning they happened. For real.

9. The appearance of Deadpool’s suit at the end is a nod to his grey suit from the comics

Towards the end of the film after Flamefist/Russell uses his powers to ignite Deadpool in mid-air, the Merc with a Mouth gets back up looking a little crispy:

It’s a sly nod to a grey-toned suit Deadpool donned in the Uncanny X-Force series written by Rick Remender:

Pretty fitting that the X-Force team is formed (or is in the proto-stage of being formed) shortly thereafter in the film, right?

10. On Deadpool’s hand-drawn map there’s a drawing of Wolverine marked “Prisoner 24601,” the same prisoner number for Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, a character also played by Hugh Jackman.

Monsieur Logan, we presume?

11. The sound Cable’s gun makes when he recharges is an homage to another time-travelling cyborg character

Does the sound Cable’s gun makes when he recharges sound familiar to you? That’s because it’s the same sound the T-1000 makes when it moves through the hospital cell door in Terminator 2.
