The Poe Dameron series continues to piece together the heroic acts of The Force Awakens today with issue #28. This latest story arc has fleshed out missing pieces we didn’t see in the film and also serves as showing how Poe, Rey, and Finn all get caught up to speed since they were split up in The Last Jedi.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

Why does this matter?

This week, Poe details the heroic acts to take down Starkiller base, the plan that got as many Rebels out of D’Qar alive, and a key Rey moment post-The Last Jedi you won’t want to miss. Seriously, this Rey moment is pretty important when it comes to Rey learning all about the Force.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Star Wars: Poe Dameron #28 Review

Gorgeous.

There is a lot to like about this issue, but it also seems to be holding back in regards to big reveals which was a common issue in the previous issues of this story arc. This issue opens on an epic shot of Starkiller base rendered beautifully by Angel Unzueta. The next page is a double page layout with the base and a montage of moments like Han Solo driving the Millennium Falcon, and Finn infiltrating the base on the ground. Over these pages, Charles Soule writes Poe’s captions as he details what happened to Finn. This recounting takes place after The Last Jedi with Leia, Finn, Rey, and Poe all on the ship that escaped Crait.

This issue ends with new scenes on D’Qar after Starkiller base was destroyed, but before they were attacked by the New Order. These scenes add a new heroic element we weren’t aware of further making Poe one of the best characters in the new movie universe. These scenes also include C-3PO and Leia with important parts to play in the narrative. Above all else, though, these scenes continue to reveal how Poe is a good leader and also one of the most heroic characters this series has ever had.

Midway through the book, there’s a short one-page scene with Rey Star Wars fans should not miss. In this scene, Rey is reading one of the sacred texts she nabbed off Luke’s island. It’s not much, but C-3PO takes part in a major moment of reflection for Rey that hardcore fans will be talking about for some time. In this scene, Unzueta continues to prove how good they are at drawing the faces of these characters. It’s not awkward or strangely photorealistic, but a good representation that’s believable.

It can’t be perfect can it?

This issue suffers a bit like the last issue because the new scenes being revealed don’t seem all that important. The opening Starkiller base attack, in particular, doesn’t add much to the battle we didn’t already know or that we couldn’t have guessed at. That’s nine pages devoted solely to a scene not adding much. The last few pages begin to develop a major heroic feat for Poe to help the Rebels escape the D’Qar base, but it’s only the start of something. The Rey scene is great but only lasts a single page. When you take into account the value of the scenes in this issue it’s minimal at best.

Is it good?

A decent tissue with a key Rey scene you won’t want to miss. That said, that scene is very short and this issue doesn’t add a whole lot to The Force Awakens.

Is it good?
An okay read that doesn't feel necessary but does have a key Rey moment.
A one page moment with Rey is huge, especially if you want a new scene post-'The Last Jedi'
Soule writes a strong Poe who is more heroic by the page
The art can be breathtaking
The reveals in this issue aren't all that revealing and don't add a lot, especially the Starkiller base attack
