The dream of the ’90s is alive on MTV.
The network announced today that they are rebooting several shows that made their name in the ’90s, most notably Daria. Daria was itself a spinoff from the wildly popular Beavis and Butt-head, where sullen, sarcastic teenager Daria Morgendorffer made her first appearance. Daria ran from 1997 to 2002 and is considered by many to be an all-time great teen cartoon. The show will be reborn as Daria & Jodie, written by Grace Edwards of Inside Amy Schumer and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame.
MTV’s press release says Daria will be “reinvented through the eyes of heroine Daria Morgendorffer and one of her closest friends Jodie Landon. These two smart young women take on the world, with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender and race.”
In addition to Daria, MTV is rebooting The Real World, MADE, and Aeon Flux — which will be reimagined from an anime-style cartoon into a live action show. These shows are being created by MTV’s new production unit, named MTV Studios, and according to Deadline, the shows may not actually air on MTV — they are currently being shopped around streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Apple’s yet-unnamed upcoming streaming service.
