Jason Aaron’s run on Thor has been one of the best in recent memory. The series was reborn back in June when Odinson took the mantle of Thor once again. Can Aaron and Del Mundo keep the quality going?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official synopsis reads:

War rages across the land of the dead, and not even the reunion of Thor with his brother Balder can stop it! Perhaps peace might come from the wedding of the century… in Hel! With Hela, the goddess of death, as the bride, which Odinson brother is going to be the lucky groom? And what special surprise guest is looking to put a deadly stop to the nuptials?

Thor #3 Review

Tell me about it!

A wedding wasn’t something I expected to read in a Thor book, however this wedding has been the most interesting one out of the three in the past month. No big hyping up, no huge twist regarding the wedding. Just a simple marriage between the Goddess of Death and Baldur the Brave. But of course, it’s an Asgardian wedding — it’s not going to go off without a hitch.

The artwork within this issue by Mike Del Mundo is just fantastic and out of this world as usual. His really stylized artwork with the colors by Marco D’Alfonso really give it this almost surreal feeling with a water painting feel to it. The book has such a fluidity to it that makes it feel so sublime and just gives a real otherworldly effect which works really well for the setting of the book being in Helheim.

The writing by Jason Aaron has this real fun and lighthearted feel to it that I would compare to Thor: Ragnarok. There’s a humorous line somewhere on almost each page and especially through the dialogue of Thori, the helhound sidekick of Thor who has a rivalry with Thor’s goat-steed. While this humorous tone is something I personally like it does feel a bit jarring considering the events of The Death of the Mighty Thor which has only recently finished. Overall this arc so far seems like a Helheim roadtrip between Thor and his brothers on a quest to stop the dark elf king Malekith from igniting the War of the Realms (which arrives next year) and stopping the endless hordes of the dead from falling under the control of Queen Sindr, daughter of Surfur of Muspelheim, the land of fire, who has allied herself with Malekith.
