The battle over the Infinity Stones begins in this epic and shocking issue! A new Infinity Watch is convened by Doctor Strange to protect the stones from an unknown threat. As expected the stones bring more trouble than they are worth for the new “team.”

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

What the hell is going on?

So the Stones are back and Strange is leading the charge to protect them. Matters become complicated when the current holders of the stones distrust each other in their first meeting. The holders are Black Widow with the stone of space, Dr. Strange with time, Adam Warlock with soul, Starlord with the power and Turk Barret with mind. Yes, you read that correctly: Turk Barret has the mind stone. Further adding to the situation is Requiem. Requiem is hellbent on getting all the stones and claims to be doing it for the “greater good.” Oh, and Loki is involved….he is on a self-discovery journey…which include the stones. It’s a battle royale for the stones, basically.

How does the art hold up with the action?!

The issue is filled with Asgardian-, space, and Earth-based action. Mike Deodato Jr.’s art does wonderful work at capturing the intense action of the comic. The gritty tone of the art helps to reflect the gruesome decisions that certain characters take, which are nothing less than jaw-dropping. Deodato’s take of Rocket Racoon in combat is truly is an eye-pleaser!

How’s the story?

The first issue gives a nice introduction to what we should expect as the story progress. Gerry Duggan does a great job at presenting a story so that readers don’t need to read every Marvel comic to understand what is going on. You might need some basic knowledge, but casual readers shouldn’t be too lost. Duggan gives us robust, major character dilemmas, which will hopefully be explored more in the coming issues. Loki is struggling to find himself, the Guardians of the Galaxy are disbanded, and Doctor Strange is attempting to hold things together. The supporting cast doesn’t get the same kind of treatment. Duggan could have developed a bit more of the secondary characters’ views on the stones.  Given the size of the event and the cast, it should be no surprise that certain characters will get more attention than others.
