The Spy Who Dumped Me Review: Mostly effective comedy-adventure

Most of us have never been through a break up with these ramifications.

Ever been through a break up? Well, if you are like most people and have, at least it didn’t have these kind of repercussions attached to it. Fortunately, two bad ass women turn out to be more than capable of dealing with these, let’s say, less than desirable circumstances.

So what is The Spy Who Dumped Me all about? Well, it’s a comedic adventure involving two best friends who are swept into a dangerous mission involving the ex boyfriend of Mila Kunis’s character. Audrey, is reeling from her break up with Drew (Justin Theroux), when she learns that her ex is actually a spy. She goes to tell her best friend Morgan (Kate McKinnon), when assassins descend upon the house. After surviving a hail of gunfire, the two are now on a mission with a special package to deliver.

I didn’t really know what to expect going into this film, since I had heard mixed reactions. Some said it was disappointing and the movie didn’t give McKinnon anything to work with, while others praised it and said it was hilarious. Now after seeing it for myself, I can confidently say that while this film is no home run, it is a fun time. There are of course positives and negatives here, but fortunately the amount of positives outweigh the aspects that didn’t quite work. The Spy Who Dumped Me Review: Mostly effective comedy-adventureSo what worked in this film? To me, what stood out as the biggest positive, was the casting. Everyone involved really threw themselves into their roles and just went for it, Kunis and Mckinnon most of all. I’ve always been a Kate McKinnon fan, starting with her hilarious Saturday Night Live sketches, and then loving her in the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters. Since I am such a big fan of hers, I was sincerely hoping she wasn’t given a lackluster role to play here, and thankully she wasn’t. She delivers the comedic material effectively and plays the character in a really lovable way. Also, her character doesn’t turn out to be some annoying shtick. The writers actually give her some heart, which is very refreshing.

I was not a huge fan of Kunis going into this film, but I must admit that she does her role justice. I don’t think I can see Audrey being played by anyone else. In addition to her acting abilities, the chemistry between the two leads is also a big reason why I can’t see the role being recast. The two make a great team and there’s a really fun energy about them.

Another thing that this film was able to pull off effectively, is really well done action sequences. You might wonder at some points during the film whether you’re watching The Spy Who Dumped Me or Mission Impossible: Fallout. The last big positive is Sam Heughan, and the character he plays. His character is just such a great part of the film and Heughan portrays him very well. The Spy Who Dumped Me Review: Mostly effective comedy-adventureWith all these great positives, what are the negatives that pop up? Unfortunately, while a good portion of the humor does land and turns out to be effective, not all of it does. There was actually a certain point, a little less than halfway through where the comedy was turning bland and I was thinking please don’t let this be taking a turn for the worst. Thankfully, it picked itself up and got back on the right track, but there is a small section where the comedy just doesn’t really work. Also, I wasn’t really feeling Justin Theroux’s performance; he wasn’t terrible, but everyone else did such a great job, that when you put his performance next to the rest of the cast, his performance had a phoned in feel to it.

So, to wrap it up simply: The Spy Who Dumped Me might not be the best entry in it’s genre but it is a very fun film carried by terrific leads.
