Rogue and Gambit had a honeymoon like most comic book superheroes; at first, it seemed blissful and great, but quickly they learned nothing stays perfect for long. It’s like the message in all these weddings is to make the best of it, which Gambit and Rogue attempt to do in this second issue. A difficult thing when Deadpool, Rogue’s ex, tags along.
So what’s it about?
Read our preview.
Why does this matter?
Rogue and Gambit are actually a couple making their interactions fresh and new. Kelly Thompson is writing with a heavy dose of fun and adventure too, pushing the mutant story into space where, some might argue, it belongs.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?
This issue is all about the chaotic addition of Deadpool to the Rogue and Gambit dynamic. He’s basically a nutter who is having a laugh interrupting the two and also helping them (when it serves him). Thompson makes these interactions fun, almost making this issue read like a conventional Deadpool comic. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it was certainly unexpected. This is an action adventure though so the addition of Deadpool makes things even more fun.
Rogue shines through strongly and ends up being a lead hero you can’t help but love in every panel. Her powers are utilized very well serving as a reminder she’s basically an Omega level superhero. Her character shines through very clearly too, as she’s practically smirking through every explosion and uppercut.
The art by Oscar Bazaldua and color by Frank D’Armata is very clean and expressive. This is a straight action adventure with a lot of fighting and explosions and the special effects, like blur, are utilized to keep things moving.
It can’t be perfect can it?
It’s surprising how unimportant Gambit is in this book. He’s essentially chasing Rogue every which way doing his best to help in the fight but is very underutilized. Deadpool serves as an element to shake things up, but I didn’t expect Gambit to be shoved aside.

Aside from this the general flow of the book is fun, but most of the events are circumstantial and unimportant. Yes, Rogue gets punched or blown up, but she’s fine a panel later. Gambit is in trouble, but not for long. These characters are invincible and you never worry for them knowing full well they’ll get through whatever enemy shows up next. I like these characters, but it’s hard to care.
Is it good?
A good second issue thanks to Rogue being a total boss. Deadpool has added a special amount of weirdness to disrupt the dynamic Gambit and Rogue shared, but it is at the cost of the events mattering.
