The LEGO minifigure is an iconic toy to say the least. It’s an action figure in a sense and also incredibly customizable. It’s also instantly recognizable given the number of sets produced by LEGO over the years and the iconic Lego Movie. It’ll become even more famous next year when LEGO Movie 2 hits cinemas, but before that LEGO is celebrating its 40th birthday in style today.
Take for a moment to think about all the minifigures ever created. We’re talking a every beloved character in mainstream media from Harry Potter to Princess Leia and in the span of 40 years LEGO has created over 8,000 different minifigures. To celebrate, LEGO has compiled a collection of historical images and short videos showcasing the evolution of the minifigure dating all the way back to 1978 when it was first created.
