Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #2 Review

The whole gang plays virtual reality D&D!

It seems like a no brainer to mix Dungeons & Dragons with Rick and Morty since both feature highly interesting fantasy elements. They’re also both really entertaining if you like to dig into lore and detail. The second issue picks up where the last left off but, uh oh, Rick and Morty may be dead!

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

Death, dice, and diabolical plans! Rick Sanchez has been power gaming since the ’70s, but this time he may have finally met his match–his family. The world’s greatest role-playing game. Reality’s most dysfunctional animated series. What could go wrong?

Why does this matter?

The first issue was fantastic even if you aren’t a Dungeons & Dragons fan. This second issue progresses the story while also keeping things a little less nerdtastic with a Rick and Morty vibe longtime fans are going to love.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

This issue opens with Summer and Beth encountering the mess Rick, Morty, and Rick’s Dungeons & Dragons friends left. Boys will be boys, but as the story progresses we learn Beth and Summer may love to roll the dice too. This issue wraps up the big conflict of the last issue and then dives right back into a virtual reality D&D game created by Rick (since he learned his lesson at the arcade). That makes this an easy to enjoy the story for non-D&D fans since it doesn’t get into the rules and language, though it does still drop a few insider jokes.

Patrick Rothfuss and Jim Zub write a great issue here that is filled with laughs, plenty of gore, and a surprisingly smart ending that puts into question just how cool Rick is compared to Jerry. It’s an interesting turn and it actually gets you thinking about Jerry and Rick being somewhat sad in their own ways. It’s easy to make fun of Jerry since he’s so stupid, but maybe he’s not so bad if even Rick can be sad. There are also great bits for Summer and Beth to show off their stuff and fans of these characters will love what the writers have done with them.

Troy Little continues to draw a great series that is a dead look-alike for the show. Colors by Leonardo Ito support that and both get to have a lot of fun with some wacky alien creations. A Cthulhu character, in particular, has a hilarious look but also functions as a janitor (you’ll see it’s great). It’s also quite fun how this book is capable of going full sci-fi with its visuals and then at a turn go full fantasy. Great stuff.

It can’t be perfect can it?

My only gripe is I’m not exactly sure what happened at the very end of the issue. I have a guess, but it’s not quite clear if Jerry ruined things or saved things. We’ll see next issue. Further, the cliffhanger doesn’t leave the reader with any real understanding of where it goes from here.

Is it good?

Another great issue that mixes role-playing games and sci-fi so very well. Fantasy, sci-fi, and plenty of humor all add up to a great comic not to be missed.
