Trust Machine: The Story Of Blockchain Review: Interesting documentary caters to specific audience

Trust Machine is the first blockchain-funded, blockchain-distributed, and blockchain-focused documentary, which makes it that much more intriguing.

Trust Machine: The Story Of Blockchain is a documentary that teaches about what blockchain is, why it’s important now, and what could be achieved in our future with it. It’s written and directed by Alex Winter (Bill & Ted franchise) and narrated by Rosario Dawson (Rent). Before viewing the film, I learned that it is one of a kind. Trust Machine is the first blockchain-funded, blockchain-distributed, and blockchain-focused documentary, which makes it that much more intriguing. Despite this meta charm, it wasn’t amongst the greatest documentaries that I’ve seen prior, although incredibly informative.

Trust Machine begins by introducing us to hacktivist and blockchain expert Lauri Love who, because his skills are a threat to the United States government, is facing the possibility of serving a ninety-nine year prison sentence in the U.S. despite having never set foot on the country’s soil in his lifetime. This is explained to us throughout the documentary. During the opening scene, he tries to draw his audience in by telling us that, on websites such as Facebook, we’re actually products rather than consumers.Trust Machine: The Story Of Blockchain Review: Interesting documentary caters to specific audienceAward-winning filmmaker Alex Winter, who has written and directed other documentaries, such as Downloaded (2013) and Deep Web (2015), focused on a main point in Trust Machine. His interest in decentralization and inclusion is what started it all, but the message behind creating the film started to change as he realized that blockchain was an unstoppable force. He worked with editor Tim Strube to put together a film that flowed nicely and efficiently, which gave off a professional and trustworthy atmosphere.

Rosario Dawson was cast as the documentary’s narrator, and despite not physically appearing on the camera even once, her voice stood out. Her presentation was calm and collected as she delivered Winter’s script. She has a firm and serious tone while explaining the subject at hand, that doesn’t take away from the general kindness of her voice when speaking.

There were several people interviewed during Trust Machine, and each one spoke with intellect and passion while expressing their ideals and views. Despite their clear and undeniable knowledge and confidence on the subject matter, I found it really hard to follow along. I went into this with an open mind. I had no prior knowledge of blockchain and cryptocurrency, but I was willing to learn. Unfortunately, I could only understand bits and pieces. Therefore, for me, Trust Machine failed to get its message across and I feel the same way about Bitcoin leaving the film as I did coming in: I don’t care. The documentary kept losing my attention, hence I would have to rewind a bit and put effort into focusing on the film. Several times, I found myself checking to see how much longer I had until it’s conclusion.

Trust Machine: The Story Of Blockchain is an interesting and modern concept, and although the cast and crew in this film did a splendid job, I don’t think people who don’t already have some sort of knowledge of this subject would understand what this documentary is trying to portray. They showed off their intellect and understanding, which is important in order to earn the trust of your viewers, but just like during a visit to the doctor’s office, some people (like me) need things to be taken down a notch. Therefore, I give Trust Machine a rating of 6.5/10.
