In a reflection piece from producer Eiji Aonuma in the latest Zelda series art book, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild–Creating a Champion, in which he writes about reactions to the game and his experience working on it, he confirms that Nintendo isn’t taking a vacation from Hyrule even after Breath of the Wild‘s long development cycle.
He writes, “Development of the next Zelda has already begun,” confirming that Nintendo is indeed working on the next iteration in the series and goes on to say, “I think it’s safe to say that there is another Zelda because of the kind of world we were able to create for Breath of the Wild.”
Based on this statement, it’s possible safe to speculate that the next Zelda game will take place in the same world as Breath of the Wild. After all, it would be a shame for the Zelda team to put so many years into that open world and its physics for it to be left behind after only one game. When we actually hear details regarding the next Zelda game is still up in the air, but with titles Animal Crossing and Pokémon coming to the Switch next year, it’s unlikely they would pull focus back to Zelda with anything more than a logo—if that—until those games have launched.
Whenever Nintendo decides to announce it’s next Zelda title, be sure to check out AiPT! for the details of their next visit to Hyrule!
