After 3 seasons Netflix cancels ‘Daredevil’

Another Marvel series has waved goodbye to the popular streaming service.

The sad news continues for fans of Marvel’s Netflix superhero dramas, as Deadline has just broken the news of Netflix’s decision to cancel Daredevil just one month after concluding its third season.

The series, which follows blind lawyer-turned-vigilante Matt Murdock waging a one-man war against crime in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, saw much lower ratings than previous years, even with the third season introducing fan favorite characters such as Bullseye and Sister Maggie Grace. This will be the third Marvel series cancellation in two months, following last month’s decisions not to renew Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

In a statement to Deadline, Netflix addressed the difficulties of canceling a beloved property, saying, “We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note.”

This presumably comes as a surprise to the cast as well as fans, as series star Deborah Ann Woll recently discussed her 4th season hopes with The Wrap, expressing her desire to add another female character to the series and develop Karen Page further.

Fans are right to wonder what this announcement means for the remaining slate of Marvel dramas on the streaming service, especially with Disney launching their own streaming service with its own batch of Marvel showsJessica Jones season three is currently in production and the second season of The Punisher is expected to premiere in the first quarter of 2019, meaning viewers can at least look forward to a Marvel presence on Netflix in the immediate future.

We may also take comfort in Netflix’s ambiguous statement concerning Matt Murdock’s future: “the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.” Whether this means we haven’t seen the last of Charlie Cox as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen or that Marvel has plans for a new take on the material in film or television, one thing is for certain: Murdocks get back up.
