Aquaman is officially the highest grossing DC Extended Universe movie ever

DC’s latest release is nearing $900 million worldwide gross.

As of Saturday January 5, 2019, Aquaman has passed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to become the highest grossing film in the history of the DC Extended Universe. Since its release last month, DC and Warner Bros.’ latest superhero film has pulled in $887 million worldwide, pushing aside Batman v Superman’s $837 million and claiming the throne of highest grossing film.

The King of Atlantis has topped the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row with an estimated $30.5 million, bringing its domestic total up to $238 million. At this rate there’s little question that the film will pass $300 million domestically — quite the milestone for a superhero that has long been mocked and laughed at.

Aquaman has done exceptionally well overseas, with international sales bringing in 75 percent of the film’s revenue. Unsurprisingly, China leads the way internationally, grossing $279 million making the Aquaman the country’s second-biggest superhero film of all time behind Avengers: Infinity War.

While the film hasn’t exactly had five star rave reviews across the board, it’s still doing fairly well with mostly average scores from critics (and a “great” score here at AiPT!). Audiences are reacting extremely positively, with many people calling it one of the better adventure films to come out in years. I had a ton of fun watching it, loved the cast, and was extremely impressed by the CGI, costumes and special effects.

Assuming the film passes $900m worldwide, it will pass Spider-Man 3 as the fifth-biggest solo superhero movie ever behind The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Iron Man 3and Black Panther.

Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm and Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus. You can see it in theaters everywhere now.
