Judging by the Cover – 1/9/19 new releases

Jason and Eric share their favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured AiPT! Podcast co-host Jason Segarra and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Jason’s Picks:

Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #4
Cover art by Bengal

Ghost Spider

Marvel Comics

The contrast in this piece is off the charts! The luminescent glow on Gwen’s suit glistening in the moonlit rain is a hyper-evocative visual cue, and the foreground being a literal field of the fallen spiders before her really speaks to Gwen’s new status as the Ghost Spider. Even though I don’t really care for Spider-Gwen as a character (though she’s vastly better than Gwenpool), this is definitely a book I’d grab from the shelf. Bengal at his best here.

Thor #9
Cover art by Michael del Mundo

Judging by the Cover - 1/9/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

So I’m not crazy, they’re trying to make the Frost Giants look like the Orcs from Warcraft, right? That’s why they used that font for the War of the Realms event too, yeah? Anyway, I’m a sucker for an action shot on a cover, and Thor launching headlong into battle with an adversary ten times his size is just an awesome site to behold. The battle pose, his hammer crackling with energy, the way the snowflakes in the fore and background are all comprised of Mjolnirs– this is a fun piece that’s true to the character and sets the stage for a rollicking good battle.

Self/Made #2
Cover art by Eduardo Ferigato

Judging by the Cover - 1/9/19 new releases

Image Comics

I love an image that tells a story, and this cover contains so many informative bits for those of us who are unfamiliar with the series. The setting of a foreign, domed world featuring a futuristic cityscape cast against a barren planet; the simple, almost tribal dress of our center figure contrasted with her sci-fi setting; her confused and astounded posture seemingly erasing, however momentarily, the clear trauma she’s experienced as evidenced by the blood on her feet and hands– this is a master class on visual storytelling and wonderfully realized imagery from Ferigato.

Eric’s Picks:

Nightwing #56
Cover art by Otto Schmidt

Judging by the Cover - 1/9/19 new releases

DC Comics

I love how wide of a variety of cover artists this era of Nightwing has had. Otto Schmidt’s take on the character is cool, and I especially love his coloration. The contrast between the style used for rendering Dick versus the city background is also visually pleasing. This is a cool cover all around.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #2
Cover art by Marco D’Alfonso

Judging by the Cover - 1/9/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

I always find images with a Vitruvian Man-esque composition quite fun. It works even better than usual here when you think about how spiders have more limbs than humans. The various aspects of Miles’ life are well-conveyed through the spheres by his various hands. From schoolwork to crime-fighting, each touch is rendered adorably.

Aliens: Dust to Dust #4
Cover art by Gabriel Hardman

Judging by the Cover - 1/9/19 new releases

Dark Horse Comics

Nothing captures the horrific fun of the Alien franchise like a human getting chased by a pack of Xenomorphs. Hardman does a great job of conveying certain doom; there’s no escape to be found here. The composition is simple but very effective, and the coloration is gorgeous. The contrast between the bright yellow and the black of the spire and Xenomorphs amps up the intensity on what’s already a striking image.
