Luke Wilson joins the cast of DC Universe’s ‘Stargirl’

Stargirl just got some major star power.

DC Universe’s upcoming live-action Stargirl series just got some major Hollywood star power with the announcement that Luke Wilson has joined the cast. Wilson comes onboard in the role of Pat Dugan, stepfather to Courtney Whitmore / Stargirl, and former costumed hero Stripesy along with guise of Star-Spangled Kid.

The cast for Stargirl has been filling out over the last few months, with Brian Stapf as Ted Grant/Wildcat, Lou Ferrigno Jr as Rex Tyler/Hourman, Joel McHale as Sylvester Pemberton/Starman, Henry Thomas as Dr. Charles McNider/Dr. Mid-Nite, Joy Osmanski as Paula Brooks/Tigress, Neil Hopkins as Lawrence ‘Crusher’ Crock/Sportsmaster, Nelson Lee as Dragon King, and Brec Bassinger in the lead role of Courtney Whitemore/Stargirl.

Comic book writer and former DC COO Geoff Johns created Stargirl in honor of his late sister. No stranger to wearing many hats on the projects he involves himself in, Johns is the series showrunner, writer, and serving as an executive producer, with his production company Mad Ghost Productions working alongside Berlanti Productions to produce the series.

“When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and saw Bottle Rocket, I became a huge fan and admirer of Luke’s,” said Geoff Johns in a statement. “And I literally wrote this part for Luke, hoping that someday and somehow he’d play Pat Dugan. I only envisioned him. And now I feel like I won the lottery! Luke’s talent, humor, compassion — his presence and professionalism — and his creative collaboration, his ideas — we’re so lucky to have him alongside Brec in Stargirl.”

DC Universe’s official description of the character: Pat Dugan once went by the less-than-inspired superhero name of Stripesy, sidekick to a young hero known as the Star-Spangled-Kid and later Starman of the legendary Justice Society of America. Today, Pat has left his sidekick life behind him. But when his new step-daughter, Courtney Whitmore, discovers Pat’s secret past and takes on Starman’s legacy to become Stargirl, Pat is forced to come out of retirement and once again become a sidekick — to his step-daughter — this time piloting a 15-foot robot called Stripe.

While no official date has been released at this time, the series is expected to premier on August 9, 2019.
