Freedom Fighters captures the heart and fight of America.

A team like Freedom Fighters is probably more pertinent than ever. They fight Nazis and fight for the growth and support of patriotism in the USA. That’s because Hitler won the war and now rules America. In this second action-packed issue, we get to see the new Freedom Fighters kick butt. And boy, do they.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

The Freedom Fighters go public in present-day Nazi America! It’s been 50 years of fascist rule in the U.S. under Hitler and his heirs, and frankly, everyone’s had enough. A new Freedom Fighters team makes a very public debut in hopes of rallying the people and re-igniting the long-dormant American spirit. Phantom Lady, Black Condor, Doll Girl and Human Bomb strike a blow against the Gestapo’s Iron Police Force, but will it be enough to summon the long-lost Uncle Sam from retirement?

Why does this matter?

Robert Venditti is writing a compelling story about a world where we lost World War II. It puts into perspective how important that win was for America and the world. I talked at length with Robert Venditti about this and the series as a whole and I recommend reading that interview.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Freedom Fighters #2 Review

The opening page has great captions.

If you thought the first issue was slow or didn’t do enough with action, buckle up because this issue is insanely exciting. Eddy Barrows draws an awesome action sequence with four double page layouts that are huge in scope, with a great splash page to boot. The Freedom Fighters must combat a giant Nazi war machine (that looks almost like the Iron Giant in some respect) while attempting to keep civilians safe, but also get them pumped up to fight for the American cause. Barrows draws excellent action with great inks by Eber Ferreira, keeping the visuals darker in town as if we’re reading a horror story. The very last page is pretty scary in nature, giving readers a taste of what the Nazi supervillains have to offer. Colorist Adriano Lucas does an impressive job when Human Bomb uses those explosive powers. If you pay attention, each hero has a different color in play, which draws your eye and keeps their presence in the battle clear.

Venditti writes incredible captions on the opening page. Each panel shows civilians watching in awe of these heroes and Venditti clearly states how the young, old, and those who hid react to such a thing as heroes fighting back the Nazis. It’s a good way to reflect on the moment at hand and it sets up the gravity of the situation. The issue also closes with a patriotic moment and you feel the intensity of this moment thanks to the captions.

Much of the issue is quick banter between the heroes, which does an adequate job keeping you in tune with the characters. We may not know them that well yet, but you get a taste via this dialogue.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

Being an action-focused issue, this does breeze by quite quickly. It’s a fight comic, so depending on how long you linger on art it can be over and done with in five minutes flat.

Is it good?

I was compelled by the first issue, but this second issue sells any naysayers thanks to delivering on big action and a powerful message. This is a superhero team that is more needed and necessary than most. Freedom Fighters captures the heart and fight of America.
