Journey into Unknown Worlds hasn’t been in print since 1957, but it’s back this week thanks to Marvel’s 80th-anniversary celebration. This issue explores two very different horrors by two creative teams and it brings that old school horror vibe and then some.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

Why does this matter?

This is written by horror maestro Cullen Bunn and seasoned writer Clay McLeod Chapman. Straight up both stories bring the weird, strange and super scary.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Wow, both stories are great entertainment for different reasons. They both unnerve in the best of ways and succeed in crafting unique takes on common horror stories. The first involves the weird in the form of scientists on a mission and the second involves the weird with Boy Scouts in the woods. If you dig horror and experiencing that tingling feeling on the back of your neck you can’t go wrong with this comic.

The first story is by Bunn and artist Guillermo Sanna introducing a scientific team and then pulling the rug out from the reader not once but many times. It’s a classic horror story but comes with some truly horrific imagery and a very scary conclusion. If the end of the world disturbs you in the slightest prepare for the worst. Bunn proves some of the scariest things in life are those we don’t understand and yet, like climate change, when we do it’s even scarier.

The second story by Chapman and Francesco Manna opens with some Boy Scouts (they are called Bear Scouts here) telling scary stories around the campfire. This leads to a bunch of boys bullying another and you can guess they will highly regret this in the end. Manna does a fantastic job with the monsters which are grotesque and creepy. This story has a classic campfire feel complete with a final twist suited for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

The only thing that threw me off while reading these two great stories was a boy remarking in the second story how the monster was “Beautiful.” Boy, what are you smoking?! That thing is hideous and my guess is maybe the artist didn’t make it as pretty as intended? It threw me off.

Is it good?

If you’ve ever enjoyed classic Marvel Comics horror, the weird, or singular stories in the comic format you will love this. This is great horror.

Two very well written and drawn stories
Captures the horror and the weird very well
I was caught off guard by a boy who thought a grotesque beast was "beautiful"
