Morbius star Jared Leto dropped a less than subtle hint to fans today that Sony’s next Spider-Man spinoff project has finally begun production. Leto stars in the lead role of the upcoming villainous vampire film, adapted from Marvel’s Spider-Man comics that Sony has held film and television rights to for over 30 years now.
Leto took to his Instagram page to share a brief video with fans that’s captioned with simply “hello London #MORBIUS 🧛,” has no sound, and is a quick loop of Leto’s face in a dark location with red light. Check it out for yourself below.
Dr. Michael Morbius was a brilliant Nobel Prize winning scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease. In an effort to cure himself, he developed an experimental treatment involving vampire bats. As a side effect of the treatment, Dr. Morbius turned himself into a pseudo-vampire, that gained his condition through science, as opposed to mysticism. Like most vampires Morbius requires blood to survive, has a strong aversion to sunlight, and greatly enhanced speed, strength, and healing.
Joining Leto on the cast is Matt Smith in an undisclosed major role, and Adria Arjone as Morbius’s love interest, Martine Bancroft. The films protagonist is reported to be Loxias Crown, based on the mutant supervillain Crown aka Hunger.
Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are writing the screenplay, with Daniel Espinosa directing. Production began in November 2018, and producer Avi Arad shared in October 2018 that filming was scheduled to begin in February 2019. The film will join Venom as part of the Sony’s Marvel Universe with the official title of Morbius the Living Vampire, and is scheduled for release on July 31, 2020.
