Why does this matter?
Christos Gage and Mike Hawthorne are dealing the Superior Spider-Man character a new hand no longer tied to the Amazing Spider-Man line or Peter Parker. It’s an unfiltered look at a villain turned hero who has a hard time making the right decision.

This issue serves as round two between Otto and Terrax, but with a super-powered Otto to mix things up. The last issue made it very clear Otto is a true hero since he will fight till near death for the strangers of San Francisco. This issue shows that even further as he takes a real wailing. It’s fun to see the character wield cosmic rays and yet not forget he is only human. By the end of the issue, it’s hard to see him break bad, but there are other characters who may not be so sure.
Anna Maria is a major component of this issue and is integrated very well. She not only takes part in helping Terrax but serves to change things for Superior Spider-Man in a big way if it comes to it. Gage has a great handle on the character as she’s a natural born leader and also still cares for Otto in some way. She’s no dummy though, and it’s nice to see she’s smart enough not to fall into the trap of Otto’s goodness changing her mind about him. There’s a cutaway with Anna Maria not to be missed for regular old Spider-Man fans too.
The art by Hawthorne is fantastic in this issue. The power cosmic is a wonder to look at thanks to Jordie Bellaire’s colors and the poses Hawthorne puts Otto in. A couple times the power cosmic flows through Otto and the design will make you want a Marvel Legends figure pronto. Terrax’s strength is on full display and in a major turn in the fight, there’s a crumbling effect on him that looks good. In a quick comical bit, there’s some good visual comedy thanks to the reactions of Superior Spider-Man’s bad-guy brethren who pop in for a bit.

It can’t be perfect, can it?
Like the last issue, this is mostly fighting. It’s cool and has great beats, but it does stretch out the character and plot development one might be looking for in such a compelling villain-turned-hero.
Is it good?
An action-packed issue that does not hold back. Superior Spider-Man was all ego, but now I’m not so sure. It’s one of the only comics where a character’s personality is changing as the issues come in. This Spider-Man truly is superior.
