Magnificent Ms. Marvel #1 Review

Saladin Ahmed
Price: $8.99

You might be wondering why Ms. Marvel’s new book is going with “magnificent,” but there’s a clue on the very first page. Crack it open and see, but let’s be honest, we already knew she was awesome. This first issue with Saladin Ahmed taking over should get fans extra excited thanks to interesting familial issues and plenty of monsters.

So what’s it about?

Read the preview.

Why does this matter?

A new beginning for the character who has seen some big changes of late. Not only is she the leader of the globe-hopping Champions, but it appears her destiny is connected to something even greater than Earth.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Hmmmmm.

Ahmed writes a good issue maxing out the action to keep your blood pumping and mixing in relationship storytelling to draw you into the character. The issue opens with a mysterious scene on another planet but quickly cuts to Earth where Ms. Marvel is doing some damage to Deathbringer. Ahmed mixes in two key scenes with Ms. Marvel’s family to tie in her supporting characters and even weaves in a nice reminder of how she got her powers. It’s a good place to start if you’ve never read Ms. Marvel.

A conflict arises between Ms. Marvel and her parents and Ahmed infuses it with realism some might relate to. Ms. Marvel is very much upset by what they ask of her while at the same time it sounds like there’s a secret we’ve yet to uncover. This amounts to a major rock to Ms. Marvel’s world that lingers for the rest of the issue.

Minkyu Jung draws this issue with inks by Juan Vlasco and colors by Ian Herring all of which combines into a detailed and fine-lined art style. Ms. Marvel’s powers look extra fantastical from her stretching to her running across town to smashing a monster bird with her giant fists. It looks great throughout.

A lot of action in this one.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

It’s a whirlwind of an issue that takes place over only an hour or two which makes it hard to catch up on things. Like, is Ms. Marvel actively working with the Champions still? I assume so, but it’s not clear when it time this takes place. It’s certainly an isolated story, but a little context would help.

Is it good?

A great first issue that has a lot of action, good recap of the character, and a hint at some big reckonings for the character. Magnificent Ms. Marvel is fast, fun, and agile storytelling.
