Marvel Comics has been celebrating their 80th year with plenty of throwback comics like Marvel Two-in-One and an annotated edition of Marvels, just to name two. The celebration continues this week with Marvel Team-Up, which features a unique pairing of two popular heroes, employing the flip-comic format with a story starting on each side. This time though, the stories converge at the middle. Neat!

Brought to you by writer Eve L. Ewing, artist Joey Vazquez, color artist Felipe Sobreiro, and letterer Clayton Cowles, this book brings together two hopeful and free-spirited heroes. It’s the epitome of fun and feel-good comic storytelling.

This book feels like a high-value experience thanks to seeing two different days that converge. Sure, there’s a bit of overlap, but the art isn’t reused and instead shows the other perspective. The beauty of this read is how it shows similarities between Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man, but also how they’re different. There’s some nice character writing that fleshes out their typical day while also showing what they’re like in battle. The cliffhanger only promises this combination will enhance tenfold next issue and I can’t wait to read more of it.
The art by this team is exceptional. It has a fun and lighter tone, focusing on the characters’ day lives and then splashing you with Ben-Day dot explosions and speed lines when the action kicks up a notch. Sobreiro gives Peter an almost sickly, pale complexion that suits his down-on-his-luck demeanor and how tricky it is for him to do this whole adulting thing. Vazquez does a great job with the casual clothing and day-life aspects, keeping your interest, but also keeping it real. The flippability of the book is done well in the center of the book since the art turns 90 degrees, and then 180 degrees at the very center.

It can’t be perfect, can it?
At the core of this plot is a scientific breakthrough that allows people to upload their brains to the cloud. Spider-Man is in awe of this technology, which is rather confusing considering Doc Ock literally body swapped over in Superior Spider-Man and almost ruined Peter’s life forever. Hell, he even kind of died! I was expecting some kind of reference to it but it goes unnoticed and that seems like a huge plot hole to skip over.
Fans of superhero-ing and fight scenes might be left wanting more. The majority of each story is about the daily life of each character with only a quick confrontation at the very end.
Is it good?
A fun reading experience that honors the flip comic style and does a great job with each character. A charming feel-good story with hardly a dull moment.
