SPOILERS: ‘Avengers: Endgame’, where do we go from here?

A spoiler look at future stories bound to happen after Avengers: Endgame.

If you haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame stop right here. Spoilers ahead. I highly recommend you read my spoiler-free review if you want to get a feel for what this movie has to offer.

Still here? Spoilers are incoming!

By the end, of the film you’re probably feeling spent. Characters die, new directions are set up, and a general feel of a final finish has come over you. This film does a fantastic job of feeling like an ending to 10 years of films, but it also has hints at where we go from here. The question then is, where do we go from here? Let’s break this down.

For starters, we know what Marvel Studios release schedule is going to look like.

  • May 1, 2020
  • July 31, 2020
  • November 6, 2020
  • February 12, 2021
  • May 7, 2021
  • November 5, 2021
  • February 18, 2022
  • May 6, 2022
  • July 29, 2022

That said, Marvel Studios and Disney have not officially told us which films will take up these dates.

What we already know: Disney+ Shows

We know Scarlet Witch is getting a new TV show called Wandavision for Disney+. Considering she unleashed her wrath on Thanos (and nearly defeated him herself) we know she’s going through a lot mentally and emotionally. So what do we know about Wandavision? Elisabeth Olsen told Variety, “There’s quite a few other comic books that we’re pulling from and it’s going to be Wanda and the Vision, and I think at the Disney+ launch chat, they showed a photo of us in the ’50s…so I think that’s a good teaser.” Is time travel involved? Maybe she uses her chaos magic to send herself back in time to get away from it all? We’ll find out when the show airs sometime in 2020 as filming begins this fall.

SPOILERS: 'Avengers: Endgame', where do we go from here?

Disney has confirmed Tom Hiddleston will be starring in a spinoff show called Loki. The time-traveling story fits into where they left Loki in Avengers: Endgame. In the film we see Loki grab the tesseract when nobody is looking teleporting away. That means a version of him has popped off in time and space and it’s a version that has not gone through Ragnarok and become a better person. He’s the villain that was captured at the end of the first Avengers movie. This show has potential then to be focused on a more villainous version of the character. It’s worth noting this show will be overseen by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

SPOILERS: 'Avengers: Endgame', where do we go from here?

Disney has already announced Falcon and Winter Soldier which will star Anthony Mackie as Falcon and Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier. After Avengers: Endgame we know for a fact Falcon will be sporting Captain America’s shield since Cap hand delivers it to Falcon to take on the mantle. No word yet if he’ll change his name from Falcon to Captain America. There are also rumors of a Hawkeye show in development, although there was also rumors of a Black Widow movie and considering she’s dead at the end of Avengers: Endgame I’ll take that as a rumor for now.

The universe is wide open for intergalactic policing

In the film, Captain Marvel must leave it to Black Widow to protect Earth since there’s so much disarray across the universe. She’s established as basically a space policeman and a kind of Superman for the universe. There’s no reason for her to stay on Earth by the end and she most likely will continue to be a hero elsewhere. On top of this, the Guardians of the Galaxy are back together. In the end, we see most of the team together which includes Nebula, Rocket, Groot, Mantis, Star-Lord and…Thor? At the very least they’re helping Thor shove off from Earth. One notable absent member is Gamora, who we learn is a version from the past brought to the future. She’s certainly in a weird place since she hasn’t gone through the bonding of finding the Guardians and instead has gone from soldier for Thanos to a soldier on her own.

New Asgardia, its development, and where Thor goes from here

As we learn midway through the film Thor and the remaining Asgardians have taken up camp on Earth. They’ve established a small fishing town, albeit Thor was a rubbish leader. At the end of the film, however, we learn Thor is giving Valkyrie the reigns as king of New Asgardia. That puts Valkyrie in a new and honorable position especially compared to her dishonorable role in Thor: Ragnarok (albeit she made up for that by the end of that film). It’ll be interesting to see how Marvel Studios develops New Asgardia either in another TV show or in Thor 4.

Just 6 days ago Tessa Thompson said in an interview that Thor: Ragnarok director Waititi had already pitched Thor 4 to Marvel Studios and presumably it’d have something to do with Thor’s future adventures in space, or with New Asgardia. As we know Waititi’s Korg is still alive and well on Earth and Thor is now heading out to space. It was not made clear what Thor’s intentions are to go out in space, but he seems to have a destination in mind. In a quick comedic scene, he is combative with Star-Lord over the map in the spaceship navigation system. Star-Lord is trying to make a case that he’s the leader and Thor agrees, yet he keeps changing the map. What is he looking for? Clearly something!

The world is a very different place

We know for a fact 5 years have passed and anyone snapped out of existence did not age from that moment. They lost 5 years. That also means those who were not snapped out of existence lived thinking half the population was gone forever. That’s going to have long lasting effects on everyone not only on Earth but all the universe. How does this affect the psychology of so many? It’s a cataclysmic event that surely will shift mindsets in future stories. That includes Spider-Man, who will most likely have classmates that might have aged out of high school over that time. Considering Spider-Man: Far From Home has all the usual suspects still around they must have all been snapped and snapped back. It’s also now 2023 in the timeline which might affect where films take place in the timeline.

Iron Man 2.0

It’s no surprise Iron Man died heroically, but is Iron Man dead? It’s not clear where we go from here, but we do know Tony Stark left a few people with the potential of becoming a future Iron Man. We know his daughter has a proclivity for her machinery and is a good candidate of becoming Iron Man in the future. Also, at Tony Stark’s funeral we see characters looking on and one of which is the little boy from Iron Man 3. He’s now in his late teens or early 20s and is at a prime age to take up the mantle. I highly doubt we’ll see another Iron Man movie any time soon, but there’s a good chance we’ll see a new person take up the mantle. If you read Brian Michael Bendis’ last Iron Man story arc you might know Tony Stark created an A.I. of himself to help Ironheart take up the mantle, which is another option that would include Robert Downey Jr. and only require him to do voice work. That’s certainly a possibility although that will reduce the effect of his death in Avengers: Endgame.

In the end, Avengers: Endgame is a fitting end to an amazing run of movies, but it holds a lot of promise for the future either in Disney+ shows or hints at where the characters go from here. No matter what happens, keep your attention here at AiPT! for future details and news that emerges.
