Rick and Morty #50 Review

A great one-shot any Rick and Morty fan can pick up and enjoy!

Rick and Morty the comic has reached the 50th issue milestone today and I couldn’t be happier. After speaking with Marc Ellerby, one of the series’ artists (who also writes a few portions of this issue), I couldn’t be happier for Oni and the creators of this book. The series has been hilarious, creative, and my main source of Rick and Morty joy due to the show’s erratic schedule. This issue features a ton of creators too, celebrating the run in a fun anthology sort of way.

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

It’s just Rick and Morty. Rick and Morty and their adventures, Morty… Rick and Morty, forever and forever, FIFTY ISSUES Rick and MortyTM! Join us as we celebrate this milestone with a special, super oversized MORTY’S MINDBLOWER issue! Featuring creators from the previous 49 issues!

Why does this matter?

This issue opens with a foreword by Juston Roiland, who openly admits the comic has more installments of the show. He fully supports it and you should too.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Rick and Morty #50 Review

The creative team on this book is exceptional, including Marc Ellerby, Kyle Starks, Andrew MacLean, Benjamin Dewey, Rii Abrego, Sarah Graley, Jarrett Williams on art, and Kyle Starks, Tini Howard, Marc Ellerby, Benjamin Dewey, Sarah Graley, Josh Trujil writing. Each team does a two to three page story, save for the opening that runs seven pages exploring the premise. Basically this issue revolves around the secret room of bad memories Morty has asked Rick to remove from his mind. Memories so bad they are called “mind blowers.” This allows each creative team to tell their own tale, reminding us how much Morty has endured. Stories always end in a twisted or sad place and offer that good kind of hilarious torture.

Stories range from Morty killing an entire race to having his pants slip off on a mission and being laughed at. There are clever takes like a tale about Morty getting his memory erased, put back, and erased again. Two stories involve Morty befriending a strange entity (like a demon Morty or a bunch of unicorns) and both feature awful and gory results. It’s a good one-shot anyone can pick up and enjoy thanks to the episodic tales and even comes with a great montage of horror.

Speaking of, this issue has a lot of great art, some of which is a perfect mirror of the show like Ellerby’s and other styles are a bit more out there and fun.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

Since the premise requires Morty to be horrified or upset by the acts taking place, the humor is a bit similar across the board. It makes each of the stories have a similar feel where as the series has typically been more eclectic with its humor. The fact that two stories feature Morty befriending an oddity and then it dies in his arms, is proof enough of that.

Is it good?

A fun milestone issue anyone can read and get enjoyment from. The humor is dark, sometimes twisted, and a perfect example of how the comic has impressively captured the show’s indulgent weirdness so well.

Great collection of stories with a solid premise
Creative teams are on point
Easy to dive into with a one-shot take
The premise requires each story to end horribly for Morty which ends up making it feel repetitive
8.5
Great
