Microsoft held its annual E3 Press Conference on Sunday, and it was a barrage of announcements meant to hammer home their focused approach towards all things gaming. Like so many presentation videos before it, the words “World Premiere” flashed across the screen. What followed left audiences confused yet curious. Announced at the Xbox E3 briefing, Blair Witch is coming to Xbox One and PC on August 30, 2019.
The trailer begins as audiences view a character in first person racing through the woods as he escapes from beasts too fast to lock onto; his flashlight provides little comfort but is far better than the evils the dark holds. He takes shelter in a cabin, pulls his dated camera within view, only to see a mysterious figure lurking in the corner, a figure he could not see with the naked eye. Is this the new Allen Wake, or maybe a return to Silent Hill? As the trailer ends, we see Blair Witch.
Described as a “first-person psychological Horror,” Blair Witch is based on “the cinematic lore of the Blair Witch”. With any luck, no cues will be taken from Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. The game is set 1996, 3 years before the release of the original film. Players will follow Maryland Police officer Ellis, who joins the local authorities in search of a young boy who’s gone missing from the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville. Like any good horror, things take a turn for the worse, leaving Ellis to come to terms with his past and the dark forces of the Blair Witch. Bloober Team – the developers behind the indie horror hit, Layers of Fear is working on Blair Witch. If the studio’s past work is any indication fans are in for a traumatic experience.
