Square’s ‘Marvel’s Avengers: A-Day’ trailer shown at E3 2019

Team up to save the world, May 15th, 2020.

At the end of Square’s E3 presser we finally got a first look at Marvel’s Avengers: A-Day, Crystal Dynamics’ new take on Marvel’s most famous team. And…I’m kind of underwhelmed?

First, let’s talk the good: Nolan North and Troy Baker as Iron Man and Bruce Banner respectively? That’s going to be a fun banter fest from the jump. Online four player team-up, with no loot boxes and free new Avenger characters? Solid and intriguing. Original story that seems to be a little bit of Civil War and a little bit of the underground New Avengers? Well, sign me up. Crystal Dynamics has been putting out really solid products with the Tomb Raider games the past few years, so I’m willing to be the controls will be solid as well.

However…

The character designs seem off. I think that Black Widow looked far better than any of her counterparts, but holy seven hells, that Thor design needs some tweaking. You could drop him into AC: Odyssey and no one would bat an eye. I do give the crowd credit for asking “Where’s Hawkeye” a few dozen times though, as everyone’s favorite purple arrow flinger is no where to be found.

The action sequences looked very Ultimate Alliance, which we’ve got coming out this year, so it just didn’t manage to land all that well with me.

Finally, can we all agree to stop destroying the Golden Gate Bridge as a Marvel trope?

Overall, it looks like something I’m interested in learning more about, but that trailer didn’t do much to sell me on this new take on the very saturated super team.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Marvel Entertainment and Square Enix are excited to unveil Marvel’s Avengers, an epic action-adventure game that combines cinematic storytelling with single-player and co-operative gameplay. Developed by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal, Nixxes Software, and Crystal Northwest, Marvel’s Avengers will release simultaneously for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X, Stadia, and PC on May 15, 2020.

Due out May 2020, we’ll have to wait and see as more details drop.
